A speakeasy and restaurant concept slated for 221 2nd Ave.

A group of hospitality veterans is looking to open a two-concept establishment at 221 Second Ave. between 13th Street and 14th Street. (Thanks to Steven for the photo last week.)

Reps for Best Speakeasy NYC will appear before Community Board 3's SLA committee tonight to discuss their speakeasy, Sincerely, Ophelia, and restaurant, Chicken & the Egg, for the space.

According to the questionnaire posted on the CB3 website (PDF here), the space will feature 11 tables for 44 guests and a 10-seat bar. Proposed hours for the restaurant are noon to 4 a.m., with the bar serving from 5 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The questionnaire includes this sample menu (click on the image for more details)...
Tonight's meeting starts at 6:30. You can join via Zoom here.

The previous tenant at 221 Second Ave., the 11-year-old Bay-Area sports bar Finnerty's, never reopened after the PAUSE of March 2020.

Former Finnerty's space for rent on 2nd Avenue

Finnerty's will not be reopening at 221 Second Ave. between 13th Street and 14th Street.

A for rent sign now hangs outside the sports bar and self-described "party destination" featuring rent-a-keg service.

The bar closed in March for the PAUSE and never reopened. There is not any message about the closure on their website or social media properties.

Finnerty's, which opened in 2009, was an alleged Bay Area sports bar, where fans could watch games featuring the 49ers, Giants, Golden State Warriors or San Jose Sharks. Snubbed: the Oakland A's (and the Oakland Raiders before they moved to Las Vegas).

This makes two like-minded bar closures on this block... Professor Thom's also never reopened after the PAUSE...

Finnerty's returns from spring cleaning

Finnerty's, the Bay Area sports bar at 221 Second Ave. between 13th Street and 14th Street, closed in February for a spring cleaning, as noted here.

It was originally meant to be a two-week closure... but the original Feb. 17 reopening date was pushed back...

To yesterday... and Finnerty's is back ... I've never been to Finnerty's, so I can say what is different...

So here's the word from them via Twitter...

Finnerty's closes for spring cleaning this winter

Speaking of other temporary bar closures ... Finnerty's has been closed this past week on Second Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street for what the signage describes as a spring cleaning

Finnerty's will be back open on Friday. The bar is allegedly a Bay Area Sports haven, though they do not seem to show much love for the best teams there — the Oakland A's and Oakland Raiders.

San Francisco Giants celebration tree mended on Second Avenue

On Friday, we noted the Urban Etiquette Sign that an EVG reader spotted on Second Avenue near 14th Street... outside Bay Area-rooting sports bar Finnerty's. Some fans in celebration mode apparently broke off some branches...

A commenter later noted: "I see the broken limbs have been removed and damaged area sealed. Fair enough."

And here's a photo of the tree now...

San Francisco Giants fans apparently damage East Village tree during Game 5 celebration

The San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds yesterday to advance in the National League playoffs. The Giants became the first NL team to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the division series.

Which brings us to this Urban Etiquette Sign an EVG reader spotted on Second Avenue near 14th Street... near Bay Area-rooting sports bar Finnerty's.

Per the sign:

"This tree destroyed by band wagon S.F. Giants fans celebrating Game 5 at curiously S.F. affiliated bar 'Finnerty's.' Hint: Good marketing, nothing more. Not winning awards for neighbor of the year. Get this tree some Melky Juice stat!"

(Melky Juice? The sign leaver knows his or her baseball...)

And here is the damage the bandwagon fans apparently caused ...

Neighbor here will likely be rooting for the Nationals or Cardinals now.

The lines of San Francisco

I originally sent this out via Twitter around 9: 30 or so.

49ers fans already on line outside Finnerty's on Second Avenue. The Post had a feature yesterday about the bar being a Bay Area sports haven.

And a look at last week's line closer to game time....

This afternoon on Second Avenue near 14th Street outside Finnerty's, the home to Bay Area sports... the San Francisco 49ers played the New Orleans Saints today...
