Photos by Stacie Joy

ICYMI: Gizmo is now open in its new storefront at 626 E. 14th St. between Avenue B and Avenue C.

Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid, the husband-and-wife owners (far right below), debuted the space last Tuesday. They hosted a small gathering for neighbors ...
The sewing supply and repair business is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is (212) 477-2773. (A new website is in the works.)

Until the end of February, Gizmo lived at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street for 32 years. Their landlord did not offer them a lease renewal.

Checking in on the new East Village home of Gizmo, opening this month

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Updated: They are OPEN as of Oct. 15!

-----

It's starting to look like Gizmo in here.

When we last checked in with Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid, the husband-and-wife owners of Gizmo, they had just picked up the keys for their new storefront at 626 E. 14th St. between Avenue B and Avenue C... ending a months-long search

They've been busy these recent weeks putting together the space for their sewing supply and repair business...
Their opening-day goal is Oct. 15, though it could be a few days earlier. (As we reported, Hossein loves Halloween and wants to be open before then.)

The hours will be Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., and closed Sunday and Monday, although Rosa admits they may be open additional hours if needed. The phone number remains (212) 477-2773.

Until the end of February, Gizmo spent 32 years at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street. Their landlord did not offer them a lease renewal. (No. 160 remains tenant-free, BTW.)

A new East Village home for Gizmo

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

After months of searching, the owners of Gizmo have found a new storefront for their sewing supply and repair business.

Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid recently signed a new lease for 626 E. 14th St. between Avenue B and Avenue C ... and just picked up the keys...
Rosa and Hossein previously looked at this storefront. They circled back to it after finding nothing else in the neighborhood that was within their budget and accessible for customers with mobility challenges.

The new space is in a salon that closed during the pandemic. When they arrived, it was still full of beauty supplies. The couple is currently boxing up the salon's remains to donate.
As renovations continue in the weeks ahead, the iconic Gizmo neon sign that hung in its longtime First Avenue window will return. The phone number (212-477-2773) and website are the same. Hours will be flexible initially, but the couple said they are considering opening five days a week from noon to 6 p.m.

Rosa and Hossein wanted to express their gratitude for the community's support after news broke in January that they would need to find a new outpost for their longtime business. They are already planning a grand opening celebration.

Hossein said they want to be open by the end of September, as he wants to be up and running before Halloween.

"Halloween is my best day," he said. "I love Halloween and all the Halloween people."

Rosa also confided that she loves Banksy and wants him to come and install a piece of artwork on the side of the building. "Banksy," she said, "if you are out there, I have the key and can make this wall perfect for you!"

In the interim, much work is needed to prepare the space and move all their stuff from storage. They hope to get some neighborhood volunteers to lend a hand.

Gizmo spent the previous 32 years at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street. Their landlord did not offer them a lease renewal (this on top of rent increases that made it increasingly difficult to stay here anyway).

Meanwhile, the former Gizmo space remains tenant-free ...

That's all for now for Gizmo

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

For the first time in 32 years, the storefront at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street is no longer home to Gizmo.

As we've been reporting (here and here), the sewing supply shop was not offered a lease renewal by their landlord (this on top of rent increases that made it increasingly difficult to stay here anyway).

Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid were ready to sign a lease at 319 E. 14th St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue. However, at the 11th hour, they learned that the building had been sold and no lease would be granted to them.

So, over the past few days, they packed up their full-to-the-brim shop and placed everything in storage.
Rosa thanked everyone who called and messaged... and stopped by the shop. She and Hossein haven't found a space yet, but they hope to start looking again after taking a few days to breathe and destress from putting everything in storage.
Hossein will continue to make house calls for sewing machine repairs.

As we've reported, the couple wants to continue in the neighborhood: "A small storefront, with easy accessibility for differently-abled patrons."

Longtime East Village sewing business Gizmo needs a new home

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid were set to begin a new chapter for Gizmo by officially signing a new lease today for their longtime sewing supply shop.

Instead, the heartbroken wife-and-husband owners are now forced to move their ample merchandise and supplies into storage as they continue a search for a storefront.
In recent months, the shopkeepers had been preparing to leave their home of 32 years at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street at the end of this month. They were eyeing two East Village storefronts.

They had all but inked the deal and received their keys at their new shop location at 319 E. 14th St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue when they were alerted by the agent that the building had been sold and no lease would be granted to them.
They had a written agreement, a three-month deposit, and a breakdown of costs (real estate taxes, water, rent, etc.) They were due to sign the new lease and pick up the keys today.

"The East 14th Street location was smaller, but we thought it would be perfect for Gizmo's next step. We toured the location, spoke to the broker, submitted the pertinent paperwork, and were approved for a lease," Rosa said. "The lease was drafted and reviewed by both parties. We set a date for the lease signing, which would give us less than a week to vacate our current location and move in, a tight timeline but something we thought would work."

The two will now move everything to a storage unit on Second Avenue and hunt for a suitable space to continue their business.

Thursday is the last day here.
We previously reported that the rent at 160 First Ave. had increased to the point that Gizmo could no longer afford to stay here.

Hossein also said it wasn't just rent; the landlord (Baumrind & Baumrind) wanted them out. They were not offered a new lease.

In addition, after a recent leak, which caused damage to fabrics and sewing machines, they were not offered any assistance from the landlord.
When I asked Hossein what would become of the space after Gizmo leaves, he said, "I don't know, a smoke and vape shop?"

During our conversation, Rosa teared up several times about Gizmo, which they opened because she needed more room for her alterations business.
"For over 30 years, it has been an absolute joy operating our small business. This neighborhood welcomes Gizmo and our family with open arms," she said. "We have enjoyed every second of being part of the fabric of the Lower East Side. Above all, we want to thank the neighborhood and our patrons for an amazing tenure, and we hope to see you all again as we evolve to a new location."

While the merchandise will go into storage, Hossein plans to keep offering sewing machine repairs.

"Hossein has made house calls and will continue to do so," she said. "That will not change. Hossein will do his best to continue servicing the machines."
Rosa asked community members if they knew of any space in the neighborhood that might work for Gizmo, specifically: "A small storefront, with easy accessibility for differently-abled patrons. We would love to stay on the Lower East Side!"

2 weeks left before Gizmo closes and relocates from longtime East Village home

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Updated 2/26: Unfortunately, the deal for a new Gizmo space fell through, and Rosa and Hossein are searching again for a new space. Details here.

As we first reported on Jan. 3, Gizmo is leaving its longtime home at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street for a new EV storefront.

Wife-and-husband owners Rosa Malmed and Hossein Amid told me that while they have not secured a new space yet for their sewing supply shop, they are still "in negotiations" for a new storefront...
The last day here is Feb. 28. Until then, expect markdowns on fabrics, trims, and zippers (50% off) and discounted prices on other merchandise.
And be sure to check out the table out front ...
Rosa said she opened the shop 32 years ago because she needed space for her alterations business. Hossein told us that their rent has increased to a point where the couple can no longer afford to stay here.

Longtime East Village sewing shop Gizmo will be relocating in early 2024

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Updated 2/26: Unfortunately, the deal for a new Gizmo space fell through, and Rosa and Hossein are searching again for a new space. Details here.

----

After 32 years in business on First Avenue, Gizmo will relocate at the end of February.

Owner Hossein Amid (below) said that his rent has increased at 160 First Ave. between Ninth Street and 10th Street to a point where he can no longer afford it.
Amid is considering two smaller spaces, either on 10th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue or 14th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

"Staying on the Avenue is too expensive," he said. "We are downsizing, a smaller store, but still in the neighborhood."

Meanwhile, there are some sales at the shop packed with fabrics, notions and thread. They also offer sewing machine repair services.
Gizmo is usually open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed on Sundays. Phone: (212) 477-2773.

Long live Gizmo

Given what's happening the next block up on First Avenue with Village Fabrics... here's an appreciation for Gizmo Notion...a seemingly rare breed these days around here...
