That's a wrap! Counting coins to benefit Social Tees at Mary O's

All those pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters really add up!

On Sunday evening, Mary O's hosted a coin-wrapping fundraiser for the East Village-based Social Tees Animal Rescue. Participants could drop off and wrap loose change ... with the proceeds going to the nonprofit on Ninth Street near Avenue A.

Mary O'Halloran (middle below), proprietor of the Irish pub and soda bread shop at 32 Avenue A between Second Street and Third Street, also provided a special menu...

... and live music featuring Soul Cake...

And by the night's end, they had collected a little more than $2,000. 

"We were so honored when Mary offered to host a fundraiser for us — Mary O's is our favorite bar in the neighborhood. We've long admired how Mary has made her place feel like home for so many people, and we're always desperate for donations for veterinary care," said Samantha Brody, executive director of Social Tees. "It was really touching to see so many regulars and animal lovers show up to roll pennies and enjoy each other's company."

A new East Village home for Social Tees

Social Tees Animal Rescue has secured a new space in the East Village — on Ninth Street just west of Avenue A.

Management of the 501c3 nonprofit animal rescue received the keys to their new home base last week.

Here's part of their message to us:

"We are so excited to make this a fun gathering spot for the community! It’s just an office so no animals will be onsite — all are in foster homes. We hope to do weekly and monthly events open to the public, and we’d love neighbors to stop in to say hi when we’re open."

No word on those office hours just yet.

Social Tees is also under new leadership: currently directors Samantha Brody and Marisa Adler with manager Julie Ainsbury.

They had been on the lookout for new space since moving out of their storefront on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue this past September.

Social Tees has had several storefronts in the East Village, including on Fourth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue and Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. They moved into the former Gimme Gimme Records space in early 2013.

Their new office is in one of Icon Realty's storefronts along 441-445 E. Ninth St. (aka 145 Avenue A), whose newish retail tenants mostly vacated last year.

Despite the retail turnover in Icon properties, Social Tees management said that they are "are in a much safer lease now," thanks to their team of pro-bono lawyers. Social Tees was previously in a challenging situation in a space taken over by Steve Croman.

A few weeks back we mentioned that Social Tees is looking for a new home. The 501c3 nonprofit animal rescue has had several storefronts in the East Village, mostly recently at 325 E. Fifth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Meanwhile, that space, in a building owned by Steve Croman, is on the rental market. The for lease sign arrived late last week. In case you are wondering, the asking rent is $4,995 a month for 500 square feet.

OUR OFFICE IS MOVING!!!! We don't yet know where we're going tbh, but it won't be far, don't freak out. Just giving you all the heads up because we'll be in limbo for a little while, so please have patience if you are trying to reach us and we're a little slower than usual — we'll have a lot going on and a lot to coordinate, and we'll really appreciate your understanding!!! Since all of our critters are in foster homes anyway, business will mostly proceed as usual. We won't be able to accept material donations for a while, but there are plenty of other amazing rescue groups in the city who'd be more than happy to have your generosity in the meantime. This is super exciting for us and a little stressful, and we're so grateful you guys have our back through this process. We'll be making more announcements soon as things unfurl!!!!

Take in a free reptile workshop at Social Tees

The fine folks at Social Tees Animal Rescue on East Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue are offering this workshop tomorrow (Saturday!) at 5 p.m. ...

So some cool news is: We are starting to host FREE REPTILE WORKSHOPS where beginners as well as seasoned "herpers" can come to learn and share info on snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, and more! (Fun fact: The first critters we rescued back in the day were reptiles, and that's how our whole rescue operation began!) The first official workshop will be THIS SATURDAY (February 11) at 5pm at Social Tees on 5th Street. Many reptile owners accidentally aren't giving their pets proper care because there is so much bunk advice out there in the pet industry, and we want to make sure your scaly beloveds are getting the right nutrition, lighting, etc. so they can thrive. COME ON DOWN for an hour of tips, suggestions, and important info! Kids are welcome (accompanied by an adult, of course). Checking in on Bolt, the dog abandoned Thursday morning in Tompkins Square Park

On Thursday morning, someone abandoned the dog in the above photo in the Tompkins Square Park dog run...

Several residents called Social Tees on Fifth Street, and their director Samantha Brody was there within 10 minutes. Social Tees took the dog to the vet ... and had him groomed...

Social Tees provided an update on the dog, named Bolt...

Drumroll please... and TA DA!!!!! You know how we rescued a matted, gnarled, filthy mop of an abandoned dog in the dog run this morning and immediately whisked him away up to our vet and a groomer? HERE HE IS NOW!!! Bolt is in good health and aced his grooming session -- they specifically called to say how incredibly well behaved he was, despite the fact that he'd clearly never even had a bath his whole life let alone a nail trimming and full shave. Bolt is about 10 months old, very silly and energetic, and loves to play. We are so honored to have been able to rescue this boy. Someone abandoned this dog in Tompkins Square Park this morning

EVG contributor Derek Berg reports that someone "dumped" this dog in the small dog run this morning ... Derek's photos are from around 9:30.

Residents called Social Tees on Fifth Street, and someone was there within 10 minutes. Social Tees is taking the dog to the vet for chip information and a check up. Derek guesses that the dog is between 1 and 2 years old...

Meet our rescue of the morning!! Bolt was found abandoned in the rain in a nearby dog run, he is very sweet but underweight and so extremely dirty and matted, his knotted coat is pinching his skin with clumps of junk that are inches deep. Who could let this happen to such a lovely, happy soul? He's at the vet now and on his way to a grooming next. This boy is so hilarious, we can't wait to see him looking and feeling more comfortable. These adorable cats and kittens need homes

The folks at Social Tees Animal Rescue on East Fifth Street shared some news of new arrivals...

We rescued 10 kittens and cats from the euthanasia list (at Animal Care & Control) a few nights ago, and half of them arrived Thursday night! More are set to arrive. THESE KITTIES NEED HOMES!!! We are also pretty desperate for foster homes for cats and kittens. Fostering lasts a week or two, and for every animal we place in a foster home we can take another out of the kill shelter.

5-7 pm weekdays; 12-4 pm weekends

And Social Tees is doing an adoption event today with cats/kittens at the Petco in Union Square from noon to 4 p.m.

Adorable cat alert! LIL BUB WAS IN THE EAST VILLAGE TODAY

Today at Social Tees on East Fifth Street, cat lovers lined up for the chance to meet and greet Lil BUB — "the most amazing creature on the planet.

The adorable Internet sensation/rescue kitty is in town for the premiere of the documentary "Lil BUB & Friendz" at the Tribeca Film Festival Thursday.

Sadly, Lil BUB was just there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to hobnob with feline fans who brought a donation of cat food, eco-friendly cleaning supplies, etc.

Social Tees has moved into the former Gimme Gimme Records space

As you may have noticed, Social Tees has a new home now over on East Fifth Street next door to the 9th Precinct ... in the former home of Gimme Gimme Records. Slum Goddess noted this move last week. (Read her post here.)

Social Tees had moved into an East Second Street storefront in December 2011. And that Second Street space is on the rental market. Per the Massey Knakal listing, "most uses considered." Rent for the 950-foor-square space is available upon request.

Gimme Gimme closed last fall after being Cromanized. The store, which had celebrated its 18th year here, has reopened in Los Angeles. If you happen to be in the area...
