Saturday's opening shot
By Stacie Joy
The Sock Man — aka Marty Rosen, pictured here — officially kicked off the shop's 40th anniversary yesterday at 99 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.
Some giveaways and stuff are going on at the store this month. (Details are on The Sock Man Instagram account.)
The shop has been at this storefront since November 2016... a rent increase forced him to close his longtime outpost at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
The Sock Man opens daily at noon, with an 8 p.m. close during the week and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (and 9 p.m. on Sunday).

Happy 40th anniversary to The Sock Man!
If you've been by The Sock Man at 99 St. Mark's Place in the past week, you've likely seen the new 40th-anniversary mural inside the front door.
This anniversary is quite a feet feat for another small business. Congrats to owner Marty Rosen (pictured above!).

Lab -320° closes after 6 months in the former Sock Man space on St. Mark's Place
After six-plus months in business, Lab -320° has closed at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue...
The owners announced the closure of the hand-rolled ice cream shop on Facebook on Dec. 30...
Lab -320° began its tenure as Lab -321, which did not amuse the owners of -321° Ice Cream Shop in Brooklyn ... who sent along a cease-and-desist letter. (And it likely didn't help Lab -320° that the popular 10Below Ice Cream opened up at 42 1/2 St. Mark's Place later last year.)
The previous longtime tenant at 27 St. Mark's Place, The Sock Man, closed last January after a reported rent hike via landlord Raphael Toledano. Sock Man owner Marty Rosen later opened a new location in late November at 99 1/2 St. Mark's Place.
Lab -320° was the fourth shop to open in 2016 in the East Village serving the traditional Thai street food ... Roll It Up on Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue closed in November for the season...
Signage on the gate points to an April 2017 reopening...
Thanks to EVG correspondent Steven for all the photos!

The Sock Man opens in new location on St. Mark's Place today
[Photo the other day by Derek Berg]
The new location of the Sock Man opens today at 99 1/2 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue. (Hours are noon to 10 p.m.)
A rent increase forced the Sock Man (aka Marty Rosen) to close his longtime shop at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue back in January. Rosen had been peddling socks, tights, lingerie and other accessories in this space since 1983. (Landlord Raphael Toledano, who took possession in September 2015, is now flipping the building.)
Very good to see the Sock Man back in business.

Time for new socks, and a store: Sock Man sighting on St. Mark's Place
The Sock Man, aka Marty Rosen, has been busy prepping his new storefront at 99 1/2 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue for business.
As we first reported last Thursday, The Sock Man is returning to St. Mark's Place after a rent increase forced him to close his longtime home at No. 27 between Second Avenue and Third Avenue back in January.
Rosen hopes to be open in the new space by Aug. 1.
Thanks to Steven and Michael Cummings for the photo!

The Sock Man is returning to St. Mark's Place
We started hearing rumors a few weeks back that the Sock Man was going to take over the vacant retail space (above) at 99 1/2 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.
Last night, the Sock Man made it official on Facebook...
Owner Marty Rosen had been peddling socks, tights, lingerie and other accessories at 27 St. Mark's Place since 1983. However, as we first reported in January, after a hefty (3X) rent increase via new landlord Raphael Toledano, Rosen decided to close the shop between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
Per the Facebook post, Rosen hopes to be back in business by Aug. 1.
The Sock Man will now be neighbors with another longtime local business — East Village Books.
No. 99 1/2 was previously home to the Kings Court Real Estate Management office.
H/T Steven and M.A.!

Lab 321 rolls out its ice cream signage on St. Mark's Place
Workers yesterday hoisted the Lab 321 letters on St. Mark's Place, where the rolled ice cream purveyors are setting up shop here between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
Lab 321 will be the third shop to open this year in the East Village serving the traditional Thai street food ... there's Roll It Up on Seventh Street and Pink Bear on East 14th Street.
The previous tenant at 27 St. Mark's Place, The Sock Man, closed in January after a reported rent hike via new landlord Raphael Toledano.

Here's the rolled ice cream shop taking over the former Sock Man space on St. Mark's Place
[Photo from last week]
Back on Friday, we told you that an ice cream shop is opening at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
The coming soon signage arrived yesterday for Lab 321, which will serve their variation of the traditional Thai street food — rolled ice cream...
Last July, 10Below opened a rolled ice cream shop in Chinatown at 10 Mott St. ... and soon enough there were three-hour lines for the desserts.
Here's the Post with more about rolled ice cream:
The frozen concoction is created by pouring liquid homemade ice cream onto a cold plate reaching temps well below zero. Employees mix in toppings, flatten it out like a crepe, and then scrape it into ice-cold rolls with a putty-knife-like tool. The result is five cute little rolls with toppings ranging from fresh strawberries to a blowtorched marshmallow and Teddy Grahams.
Will the lines form here too?
A lot of people (me included) figured they'd be a crowd on this block when the popular Japadog opened its first U.S. outlet in early 2012. That never happened.
Until Jan. 16, the storefront at No. 27 was home for 30-plus years to The Sock Man.

The scoop on the former Sock Man space on St. Mark's Place
The for rent sign is down at 27 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
Workers at the scene told EVG correspondent Steven that an independent ice cream shop will be opening in the space later this spring. That's all we know about it at the moment.

Rosen has said he hopes to find another space in the neighborhood. Meanwhile, the Sock Man remains open for business at www.thesockman.com.

Closing portraits at The Sock Man
On Saturday evening, the Sock Man closed down on St. Mark's Place for good.
Photographer Nick McManus, a group portrait artist who works on Impossible Project Polaroids for gallery exhibition in New York, shared these photos as owner Marty Rosen and friends said goodbye to its storefront of 33 years...

The Sock Man says thank you; store closes on Saturday
As we first reported last Thursday, The Sock Man is closing on St. Mark's Place after nearly 33 years here between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
The Sock Man took to Facebook on Sunday night:
The Sock Man wishes all of you all a Happy and healthy New Year! Unfortunately, after 30 years on The block, we will no longer call 27 St.Mark's Place our home. This will take place in the next week.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your support in making my business what it is. You never know where our new home will be, but in the meantime The Sock Man is still open for business at www.thesockman.com. With the low shipping rates!
Thank you for EVERYTHING!! #SaveNYC
A tipster told us that the landlord is asking for 3x the current rent.
Owner Marty Rosen has been peddling socks, tights, lingerie and other accessories in this space since 1983.
In an interview in the Daily News in 2009, Sock Man customer Chloe Sevigny called Rosen the "grumpiest man on Earth." Responded Rosen: "I have my moments. I'm from New York. We all have our moments."
Updated 1 p.m.
In a follow-up comment, The Sock Man said that Friday (Jan. 15) is his last day in business.
Updated 5 p.m.
I should have noted earlier that this address was one of the 16 East Village properties purchased by Raphael Toledano’s Brookhill Properties last September.
Updated 1/15
The store will now close by 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Have you seen these ads around for the Sock Man?
I thought for sure that the Sock Man would use Chloe Sevigny for the ad.
