Happy No. 129 to Veniero’s!

Veniero's Pasticceria opened on this day in 1894 on 11th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue. You can read the EV Grieve opening coverage here.

You can check out a comprehensive history of the business via Village Preservation.

P.S.
Yes, the VEN was out tonight on the neon signage.

Veniero's has a temporary new space on 11th Street

The other day we noticed the Veniero's-branded paper in the window of the former dry cleaners next door here on 11th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...
Perhaps the NYC institution (since 1894!) is expanding?

Well, yes! But not permanently. Frankie Zerilli, a fifth-generation Veniero family member, told us that they are renting the space temporarily for holiday storage... and for packing orders (hello cannoli kit!).

Veniero's reopens Friday

Veniero's Pasticceria & Caffe is reopening on Friday here on 11th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

The owners of the 126-year-old Italian bakery made the announcement via Instagram yesterday:

We are all in need of support right now. Moms for Mother’s Day, our workers out on the frontline, family’s and friends celebrating birthdays and more. This is why we have decided to reopen our doors May 1.

They will be selling items for takeout, delivery and curbside pickup. (You can order ahead via their website.)

Veniero's closed after service on March 28 amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Helping celebrate 125 years of Veniero's

Veniero's Pasticceria & Caffé celebrated its 125th birthday yesterday on 11th Street with free mini cannolis, live music and many happy anniversary wishes.

Joining in were two longtime East Village residents, Claudia Flanagan (above left) and Elyse Cogan, who were pleased to get a paparazzi shot in front of the Veniero's step and repeat banner with Robert Zerilli, the fourth-generation current owner and great-nephew of founder Antonio Veniero.

Veniero's celebrates 125 years today

Veniero's Pasticceria & Caffé, the East Village and city landmark, is celebrating its 125th anniversary tonight (Sept. 23!) here at 342 E. 11th St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Here's what to expect, via the shop's Instagram account:

Veniero’s is throwing a party with live music by the Creswell Club jazz band, and the event will be hosted by comedian Eddie Brill from 4-9 p.m.

Free mini cannolis are available all day while supplies last.

In addition, Veniero's is offering an 18.94 percent discount on everything in the store and online.

Antonio Veniero founded the bakery at this address in 1894.

Robert Zerilli is the fourth-generation current owner and great-nephew of Antonio Veniero.

“I’m so proud and honored that our once little Italian bakery is part of the great city of New York for the last 125 years,” Zerilli told Time Out. “Veniero’s success lies with our exceptional history with the neighborhood which drives us to uphold our excellent reputation.”

This 6sqft post has more on the history of Veniero's.

Previously on EV Grieve:

In case you want to plan ahead... Veniero's Pasticceria & Caffé, 342 E. 11th St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue, is now promoting its 125th anniversary, taking place on Sept. 23...

Antonio Veniero founded the bakery at this address in 1894, as I first reported. You can find articles about the history of Veniero's — purveyors of the best cannolis and cheesecake in NYC??? — at this link... and this one.

Veniero's turns 120 with free cookies today; plus carolers caroling

The venerable Veniero's is celebrating 120 years at 342 E. 11th St. today.

And Veniero's is making it a dual anniversary, as Lisha Arino at DNAinfo reports:

The East 11th Street bakery will hand out about 340 cookies designed to celebrate two milestones: 120 years since the shop opened in its current location in 1894, and 120 years since the Third Street Music School Settlement opened in the neighborhood as well.

The cookies will feature the two groups' logos, as well as the words “Celebrating 120 Years 1894-2014," said Robert Zerilli, co-owner of Veniero's.

“They’re big cookies, the size of your hands,” Zerilli said.

And they'll be some outdoor caroling by the school's students ... here's a map with the caroling info...

Happy Columbus Day

[Via EVG reader Steven Matthews]

A happier day if you are off work today (like me) for the holiday... a reader asked if the flag went up outside Veniero's Pasticceria and Caffe on East 11th Street in honor of Columbus Day ... seems as if it has been up for longer than that...

Anyway, here's a photo of the place in 1969 ... it opened in 1894.

When using a Groupon at Veniero's

Last evening on 11th Street. Such confusion among the Grouponers! We even heard squealing.
