This week at the Village East: 'Goodfellas,' George Michael, Stanley Kubrick and Elvis

Top photo yesterday by Steven

The Village East is back in action (as of last evening) after 11 days of screenings for the Tribeca Festival.

The theater (Village East by Angelika) on 12th Street and Second Avenue closed after the business day on June 5 to prep for the festival... and the blank marquee that night prompted a few closure queries...
You can see "Goodfellas" and "George Michael Freedom Uncut" this week... not to mention a Stanley Kubrick retrospective. Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" opens Thursday. And "The Duke," a pleasant caper, moves over here on Friday after a run at the Angelika mothership on Houston. There are other films too.

The Doctor is in...

Last night, "Doctor Who" fans started camping out outside the East Village Cinemas on Second Avenue and 12th Street... The premiere of the BBC series "Doctor Who" takes place tonight here ...

EV Grieve reader Han Shan passed along these photos of the line... which goes west on 12th Street and around Third Avenue...

What's on at the picture show?

Here at the Village East Cinema on Second Avenue and 12th Street...

I'm just glad that "I Spit on Your Grave" wasn't placed next to "Nuremberg."

Of course! Douchebag Q and A

Heh. Yeah, I know that it's the movie... still, this gave me a chuckle...

And I like "The Town Douchebag" all together....

My apologies!

Got drawn into some dumbass barside conversation...I said with much certainty that, despite being released on Nov. 27, the stuffed turkey Australia was no longer playing anywhere in the city.

I was wrong: It's at the Village East! Hurry! Should be on DVD by Tuesday.

Cinematic facelift

Seeing this gave me pause...then I realized they are just doing some minor renovations. (Or at least that's what I was told by one of the women selling tickets. Though! She acted as if she didn't even notice the building was under scaffolding.) Never can be sure these days, of course. Second Avenue at 12th Street. Why the Village East Cinemas will be showing documentaries all this week

The Post explains:

It used to be that movies in the documentary category had to play for at least three consecutive days in 12 different cities, sometimes resulting in token showings at off hours in the hinterlands.
But now, to be nominated for an Oscar for a full-feature documentary, the films have to play at least twice a day for seven consecutive days in both Manhattan and Los Angeles before the end of August.
That's why the city is overstuffed with documentary screenings this week, with a dozen flicks opening here to make the cut.
The Village East Theater at Second Avenue and East 12th Street is offering two showings a day of the documentaries "Loot," "Fuel," "Crossing Borders," "An Omar Broadway Film," "War Games," "The Choir," "No Subtitles Necessary: Laslo and Vilmos," "The Dalai Lama Film" and "Blessed is the Match."

Beats Indiana Jones on all the screens.
