Dog's cafe life: Boris and Horton signage arrives on 12th and A
The signage went up yesterday on the northwest corner of Avenue A and 12th Street for Boris & Horton, billed as "New York's first dog friendly coffee shop and community space." (Thanks to EVG regular Greg Masters for these photos!)
The sign points to a winter 2017 debut (New York magazine previously listed a Dec. 1 opening date)...
As DNAinfo reported back in the summer, the space will be divided by a glass wall into two sections, per Department of Health rules. There will be a cafe side with food and drinks for humans, and a dog-friendly side that will sell pet supplies.
The owners are Logan Holzman and her father, Coppy. The cafe is named after their dogs. The Holzmans have said that they will host dog adoption events here.

Dec. 1 date set for Boris & Horton, Avenue A's new dog cafe
As we first reported last month, Boris & Horton, billed as "New York's first dog friendly coffee shop and community space," is coming to the former Ost Cafe and Raclette spaces on Avenue A at 12th Street.
The cafe made New York magazine's fall-opening listings. (The tentative opening date is Dec. 1, per New York.)
Here's what the magazine had to say in the preview: "Logan Holzman and her father, Coppy, the founder of Charity Buzz, will open this dog café in late fall, where canines can play while their humans hang out and sip wine or coffee. Logan has an animal-rescue background, so she also hopes Boris & Horton (named for the Holzmans’ dogs) will host adoption events."

Ost Cafe closed in February after nine years in business. Their owners said that it had "become too expensive to stay open any longer." (The Grand Street location is still in service.) Raclette moved from its 14-seat space on A around the corner to the former Northern Spy on 12th Street last fall.

More about Boris and Horton, the dog-friendly cafe coming to Avenue A

Back on Monday, I reported that Boris and Horton, billed as "New York's first dog friendly coffee shop and community space," was in the works for the former Ost Cafe and Raclette spaces on Avenue A at 12th Street.
The applicants, Coppy Holzman and his daughter, Logan Holzman, appeared before CB3's SLA committee meeting that night for a new beer-wine license.

Boris and Horton, named for owners Coppy and Logan Holzman's respective pooches, will be divided by a glass wall into two sections per Department of Health rules — a cafe side will offer up beverages alongside pastries and sandwiches, while the pet-friendly side will provide a lounging space for folks with dogs, plus a photo booth and pet supplies.
"It's like basically going to someone's nice living room with your dog, and it's adjacent to a place where you can get all your food and coffee," said Coppy Holzman.
And!
Patrons are free to move between the spaces as long as their dogs stay on the designated dog side, explained the Holzmans — and staff will be on hand to momentarily watch dogs if an owner has to dash to grab a coffee.
And dog-less New Yorkers who just want to hang out with a bunch of dogs are welcome throughout, they said.
The CB3-SLA committee approved the application with some stipulations, "including installing soundproofing and monitoring noise from canine visitors."
Boris and Horton is expected to be open this winter.

On Thursday morning, someone abandoned the dog in the above photo in the Tompkins Square Park dog run...
Several residents called Social Tees on Fifth Street, and their director Samantha Brody was there within 10 minutes. Social Tees took the dog to the vet ... and had him groomed...

Someone abandoned this dog in Tompkins Square Park this morning
EVG contributor Derek Berg reports that someone "dumped" this dog in the small dog run this morning ... Derek's photos are from around 9:30.
Residents called Social Tees on Fifth Street, and someone was there within 10 minutes. Social Tees is taking the dog to the vet for chip information and a check up. Derek guesses that the dog is between 1 and 2 years old...

Reader report: This sign on East 13th Street is full of crap
An EVG reader, a self-described dutiful pooper scooper, felt compelled to fact check a fake, meant-to-look-official flyer on East 13th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue.
As the Official Website of New York notes:
The City enforces the Pooper Scooper Law and accepts reports of places where dog walkers regularly fail to pick up after their dogs. These locations include streets, sidewalks, and other areas such as open front yards next to the public sidewalk. A City agent must see the crime taking place in order to give a ticket. The Pooper Scooper Law does not apply to guide dogs or service dogs walking with people who have disabilities.
It's perhaps tricky business, though, for the city to hand out a ticket. Per a 2008 article in The New York Times: "To issue a summons, the agent must witness the dog doing its business and the owner walking away."
As for the reader's annoyance with the sign: The fine for failing to clean up after your dog is $250. New York bumped up the penalty from $100 in 2008. (The Canine Waste Law was enacted in 1978.)
So the reader wonders why the sign maker didn't put the correct $250 amount on the flyer. Perhaps the reader needs to make new flyers [someone will suggest].

All dogs in Stuy Town must now have a tag and lanyard
An EVG tipster shared the following missive with us from the senior director of resident relations for Stuy Town-Peter Cooper Village:
In an effort to keep PCVST occupied with only registered dogs, Public Safety is requiring all dog owners to hang their dog’s registration tag from the leash handle. Complimentary lanyards are now available to clip on to the handle of the leash so that the registration tag can be clearly visible. After April 30th, 2016, anyone walking a dog on property without a lanyard and tag will be asked to leave the grounds, including dog walkers who walk PCVST dogs along with non-registered dogs.
The lanyard and clips are now available for pickup at the Resident Services Office at 276 1st Avenue Loop and Public Safety at 2 Stuyvesant Oval. If your dog is already registered, simply show your dog’s registration tag to the receptionist and you’ll be given a lanyard.
Per the EVG tipster: "They should worry about out-of-control delivery guys, residents who don't clean up after their dogs and woo-ers."

Have you heard this dog in distress?
An EVG readers shared this flyer, posted outside a building on the north side of Fifth Street near Cooper Square.
Per the sign:
Have you heard a dog on 5th or 6th street that is in possible distress?
There have been reports of a dog crying out daily.
We are anxious to help the dog if she/he is being crated all day.

NYPD rescues dog locked in car on Avenue B
Last night around 10:15, with the heat index hovering around 100 degrees, passersby noticed a pit bull locked inside a vehicle on Avenue B near East Eighth Street.
Someone called the police, who arrived and freed the dog from the car… the police took the dog away in a cruiser. No word on the whereabouts of the pit bull's owner.

[Updated] More about Sugar, the missing pit bull mix with a $5k reward
You may have seen flyers up around the neighborhood for Sugar, the 6-year-old Amstaff/pit bull mix that went missing some time on Monday.
The Post has an article today on the situation ... interviewing Sugar's owner, East Village resident Morgan Bogle.
Bogle was in London on business, leaving Sugar in the care of her dog walker of three years. Then something apparently went really wrong.
Per the article:
But the man flipped out while she was away, kicking the front door of her apartment Monday while shouting and swearing, witnesses said.
“He was screaming, ‘F–k you! Let me in the f–king house now!’ ” a witness said, adding that Sugar was nowhere in sight.
“He seemed manic . . . I told him, ‘You’re acting like a lunatic.’ He was muttering stuff, but it wasn’t coherent at all,” the witness said.
A neighbor texted Bogle, and she sent a friend to the dog walker’s apartment. The pal spotted the man hiding behind a trash can outside and “acting strange,” Bogle said.
Sugar's collar and sweater were inside Bogle's apartment... but no sign of the dog. The dog walker reportedly "had no explanation" for Sugar's whereabouts.
Bogle is offering a $5,000 reward for Sugar's return. A reader who sent us the above flyer said that Sugar is spayed and microchipped. We've heard various versions of when Sugar was last seen — either Sunday or Monday ... with one reader saying that Sugar was spotted on East 26th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
