First tag reappears on the Verizon building

Speaking of tags... nearly three weeks ago all the tags and graffiti on the 13th Street side of the Verizon building were painted over... Now, as EV Grieve reader Kim notes, the first tag has reappeared on the wall on the corner of Second Avenue... (And check out Kim's Flickr page here.)

The Domino Sugar Refinery gets a SMART addition

Last week we posted some photos courtesy of Luna Park on the epic bombing at the Domino Sugar Refinery...

There has been more activity north of the Williamsburg Bridge of late.... The following photo was sent to me by the The Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve (GFOEVG)...

The GFOEVG sent us to the above photo taken by Sabeth718.... The shot (and many many more amazing graffiti photos) can be found on Sabeth718's Flickr page. Access that here. (and thanks to Sabeth718 for permission to post.)

Before these buildings are scrubbed clean

With the arrival of the fancy "classic American diner" at the Bowery and Second Street ... the building was certainly going to be spiffed up to not look so urban...

Before!

This week!

It seems as if more and more of the untidy little spaces that give the neighborhood a little remaining grit are being scrubbed clean... such as the Verizon building last week.

So, before it all goes away, let's appreciate some of what remains...

Verizon building still brown

Last Friday, Woodland Creature noted that the Department of Sanitation painted over all of the cool graffiti on the Verizon building on the 13th Street side leading up to Second Avenue...

We stopped by during the weekend to pay our respects...

The Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve (GFOEVG) figures the wall will be tagged again soon... despite the presence of the video cameras, which may or may not even work...

Meanwhile, EV Grieve reader Kim was walking by when the anti-graffiti team arrived on the scene...

...and snapped this one last photo...

Bombing the Domino Sugar Refinery

The Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve (GFOEVG) passed along a link from north of the Williamsburg Bridge... As The Street Spot noted this past Friday, the Domino Sugar Refinery was bombed last week in epic fashion...

Thanks to Luna Park for letting us repost these... She has more shots on her Flickr page.

Brownout: Verizon building graffiti painted over

Ugh. Woodland Creature brings the news that the Department of Sanitation just painted over all of the cool graffiti on the Verizon building on the 13th Street side leading up to Second Avenue... I know I have more photos of the wall somewhere... Meanwhile, here's what brown can do for you...

And The Sarah Show got this shot before it was too late...

Playing tag with 290 Mulberry

Continuing west on Houston... I've been keeping tabs on 290 Mulberry via in-the-know sources such as BoweryBoogie and Curbed... You've seen this wavy thing on the southeastern corner...

Here's the listing:

290 mulberry delivers award winning full floor loft residences and one spectacular penthouse by SHoP Architects. Amenities include: 24-hour doorman, private elevators, north, west and south exposures, and outdoor spaces with views from Broadway to Brooklyn. All homes feature wide-plank radiant-heat walnut flooring, central A/C, and in-unit W/D. Custom-designed interiors offer gloss white kitchens by Schiffiini with stone countertops, Miele gas cook top with fully vented hood, Sub-Zero refrigerator, Bosch dishwasher, Bosch oven, and Bosch wine cooler. Master bath has custom vanity by SHoP Architects, Vola faucets and rain showerhead, teak wood paneling, Siberian marble floors, frosted glass tile walls, and a clerestory window bringing in southern light. Expected occupancy, summer 2009.

StreetEasy has seven active listings, from $2.5 million to the $7.5 million penthouse. None of the units have been sold... and none of them are in contract...

So is this project in limbo? I don't know, but the sign out front seems telling... Does this look like a condo ready to sell some units?

Auditing the Federal Reserve's response to graffiti

As we reported last week, someone tagged the Federal Reserve building in the Financial District last week with the words "audit me." We watched last Thursday as a Fed Graffiti Removal team worked dilligently to remove the offending comment.

When we checked back in, the always-classy poster board and duct tape were back up on the wall...along with a few warning pylons.

Federal Reserve tagged

So, at the Federal Reserve — home of the largest gold repository in the world, allegedly! — someone took to the side of this Financial District institution with spray paint a few days ago... Officials quickly covered up the offending comments with poster board and duct tape... what did the person write on the building?

Attempts to unfasten the poster board were unsuccessful due to the large amount of Federal Reserve officers making the rounds.

Security has been tight there, of course, since the elder brother of Hans Gruber knocked off the joint in "Die Hard: With a Vengeance".

In any event! Yesterday afternoon, a Fed Graffiti Removal Team arrived to assess the scene and clean...

And what did the vandal write?

From our untrained eye, it appears to say: Audit Me.

No more sidewalk shed for 325 Bowery

Previously, we noted that the construction netting was removed by workers at 325 Bowery.

Yesterday, workers removed the sidewalk shed...

...giving light to some pretty nice tags... which will, no doubt, be painted over soon enough...

Paste tags DOB

Michael Huynh's new French Vietnamese place on St. Mark's Place continues to attract some graffiti attention... Earlier...

And now... As the Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve (GFOEVG) notes, Paste of the EE crew is the latest to tag DOB...

A bad sign at the Mystery Lot?

For nearly three years, our favorite empty lot probably anywhere (dubbed the Mystery Lot by Curbed) on 13th and 14th Street off Third Avenue included an ad for EmigrantDirect.com. (Awesome one-off buy!)

Now, in recent weeks, we just noticed that the ad has been removed...

Does this finally mean a dreaded "for sale" sign will appear?

Please no!

d.o.b. gets t.a.g.g.e.d.

Over at Michael Huynh's new French Vietnamese place on St. Mark's Place, some graffiti artists used the front for a tapestry the other evening...

...and just as quickly, the window was cleaned off...

We saw this happen with great frequency over at Caffe Buon Gusto on Avenue B and Fifth Street... graffiti would go up, some poor fool would remove it the next day... and the cycle never ended...until the restaurant just gave up, apparently.

East Village Tagging Committee finally welcomes 52E4 and the neighborhood's first gated driveway

To be honest, there's bit of a backlog. At the gated driveway at the 15 stories of condo on the Bowery near Fourth Street.

A short history of tags outside Kurve/Rhong Tiam East/that crazy looking Thai place on Second Avenue and Fifth Street

Last April, Eater noted the arrival of the first tag on the Fifth Street side of the eatery formerly known as Kurve...

Since then, the place has started to attract a few more street artists...

And earlier this week we welcomed the latest member of the street-art family here...

And maybe in a few more months...
