Water main break shutters Goat Town for tonight

Earlier this afternoon, we heard reports of a water main break on East Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... (One resident noted some brown yucky tap water...)

According to its website and Twitter account, Goat Town is closed tonight because of the break...

The empty corners of Fifth Street and Second Avenue

Rhong Tiam on the northwest corner of Second Avenue shuttered back in August... and, on the southwest corner, Saturday night marked Sin Sin's last day in business... Walked by last evening for the first time since both places have been closed... and it seemed, well, dark....

I'm curious how much longer these prime corner spaces will remain vacant.... word is the Sin Sin owners will reboot with a new concept sometime soon. (Sin Sin owner Philip Quilter didn't respond yet to an e-mail asking about future plans.)

World's long private party almost over: Rhong Tiam is returning!

The space formerly known as Rhong Tiam on Fifth Street and Second Avenue was all lit up last night... as if it was — open!



The space is being cleaned up.... and some of the garish fixtures have been moved around...





I asked a worker if they were reopening. He said no. Then he said a new place would be open next month.

As Grub Street reported last month:

"Andy Yang tells us he has closed the East Village outpost of Rhong Tiam. “It was a miscalculation,” he says of its predecessor Kurve, with its infamous Karim Rashid design." He's also considering whether to remodel it (bringing the kitchen upstairs) and reopen it with a less off-putting décor, or to simply let go of the space.

Looks as if he is going the remodeling route.

On East Fifth Street: Blue Jay vs. Cat (Plus! Cute cat video alert!)

There are several signs posted along East Fifth Street between Cooper Square and Second Avenue... (You can click on the post for a better view...) ... about a nest of baby Blue Jays... they are in danger of falling, but that's OK. The instructions on the sign tell you what to do in the event you find a dazed Blue Jay on the street...

"The eggs have hatched in the fire escape nest built by blue jays on Fifth Street ... but that hasn't stopped the blue jay father from obsessing over the cat who lives down the block."

One year later, Kurve/Rhong Tiam East decides to paint over the tags

The first tag appeared on the Fifth Street side of Kurve last April... since then, a few more have been added... and it looked like this...



Now, though, the paint came out...

Butcher Bay now being used for low-budget film shoots

I was walking on Fifth Street this past weekend, and saw some activity at now-shuttered Butcher Bay eatery.... Did they reopen?




...turns out a small crew was there to film a scene for an independent film...

The long, expensive saga of Seymour Burton/Butcher Bar on East Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B has apparently come to a close... the space is for lease...




A quck refresher on this fish eatery that opened last February:

After The former Le Tableau space closed in December 2007 and became Seymour Burton... there were gut renovations, menu changes, new chefs and CB3 lawsuits...the restaurant closed in November with the following note:



"...closed temporarily to write our memoirs..."

At Butcher Bay: A dishwashing/laundry equipment notice

Things still seem awfully quiet at Butcher Bay on East Fifth Street.... Back in November, the eatery papered over the windows...the sign on the door said: "...closed temporarily to write our memoirs..." The other day, we noticed an addition to the front door...



...this sticker.



Perhaps Auto-Chlor wants their equipment back?

A krazy few days for the former Kurve!

Kurve, the favored spot for privileged teens to prowl, had a krazy few days... So for those keeping track of the komical thai eatery at Second Avenue at Fifth Street, here's a recap...

Sunday! The buffet is back! And Kurve is now known as Rhong Tiam East.



And there's now wi-fi and Butter Lane cupcakes...

Yes! Plant saved from certain cruel (crueler?) fate at Kurve!

First, my apologies for the lousy photo. It was dark out when I passed Kurve on Second Avenue at Fifth Street last night. (Uh, being night, it would be dark!) And no way could I use the flash, and alert the 38 people working at the Starship Thaiper...and risk being pelted with foie gras torchon (with red currant jam) and spicy king salmon tartare....

Anyway! The plant has been saved! It has apparently been picked up!

Yet another strange chapter in the short history of fish-shack eatery Butcher Bay, which opened back in February on Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... after the owners gutted the space from the short-lived Seymour Burton... there have been menu changes, new chefs and CB3 lawsuits...and now, the restaurant is closed...the windows are papered over...with the following note:



"...closed temporarily to write our memoirs..."

Smooth sailing tonight...???

Also tonight on the CB3/SLA docket: the long-awaited Caffe Buon Gusto at Fifth Street and Avenue B goes for a liquor license. Meanwhile, the space continues to attract a variety of street art... such as this sailboat made from red tape...should be plenty of red tape tonight too...

At Le Gamin: à tout à l'heure!

Thanks to everyone who left a comment or sent me an e-mail about Le Gamin Cafe on Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. Apparently the place is being renovated and will reopen in a few weeks with a new theme. (Dumb question: Does a French-style cafe really need a theme?) Eater has other details. (Image via Eater too.)
