The big Asleep

The London-based trio Big Joanie released their debut record, Sistas, last month (details here) ... the above video is for "Fall Asleep."

Some background, per Cargo Records:

Inspired by The Ronettes, Nirvana, Breeders and Jesus and Mary Chain, Big Joanie have described themselves as being “similar to The Ronettes filtered through ’80s DIY and Riot Grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis.”

Red alert

Debi Martini, bassist and vocalist of Red Aunts, died this past week at age 50. A cause of death was not released. The band, from Long Beach, Calif., came together in 1991 and released five records. They last played in the area back in June at Rough Trade in Brooklyn.

Piroshka is a supergroup of sorts, featuring Miki Berenyi of Lush as well as KJ McKillop of Moose, Justin Welch of Elastica and Michael Conroy of Modern English. The band's debut record, Brickbat, is out Feb. 15 via Bella Union. The video here is for "Everlastingly Yours."

Some hazy shoegaze from Ireland in the form of Just Mustard. The video is for a song called "Pigs" from the band's debut album (made Graham Duff's best-of 2018 list) out earlier this year.

Joy As An Act of Resistance, the second record by the UK-based IDLES, has made some year-end top-10 lists.

UK shoegazers Swervedriver have a new record, Future Ruins, coming out on Jan. 25 via Dangerbird Records. The video here is for "Mary Winter."

Sniff 'n' the Beers

Amyl and the Sniffers released a new video this week... a live version of "I'm Not a Loser," which showcases lead singer Amy Taylor's energetic stage presence... look for the Australian band's full-length debut in the New Year on Flightless/ATO/Rough Trade Records.

Buying a 'Round'

The Germs' "What We do Is Secret," the 20-minute EP originally released in 1981, received the Record Store Day Black Friday treatment today ... with remastered tracks on blue color vinyl.

The audio track here is their version of "Round and Round," written and first recorded by Chuck Berry.

#FlashbackFriday with X-Ray Spex doing "Art-I-Ficial" from 1978... the band's debut album, Germfree Adolescents, was released this week in 1978.

The 'Hit' parade

After 30-plus years of work in bands like Pussy Galore, Boss Hog, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the Honeymoon Killers, Jon Spencer has released his first solo record, Spencer Sings the Hits!, which is out today on In the Red Records.

Canada's Fucked Up released their fifth record — a double LP titled Dose Your Dreams — last Friday on Merge. The video here is for "Raise Your Voice Joyce" ... and "Two I’s Closed" to show off their art hardcore for good measure.

The video for "Spacewoman" by The Breeders was released this week. The song is off the band's 2018 release All Nerve.

Surfbort party

Surfbort's new Troma-esque video premiered yesterday ... "Trashworld" is a track from the Brooklyn-based band's debut record, Friendship Music, out on Oct. 26 via Cult Records/Fat Possum.
