The first street festival (street fair!) of the season

In recent days you likely noticed the "No Parking Sunday" signs along Second Avenue... today marks the first street festival of the season, listed online as the Second Avenue EV Festival... and happening from 14th Street to Fourth Street (haven't been over there this a.m. to confirm the southern endpoint) to St. Mark's Place (thanks Derek Berg!).

Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or sun. Middle Church is listed as the sponsor.

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

In case you had forgotten! The first Street Fair in two years is now underway on Second Avenue...
EVG reader Terry Howell provided a quickie assessment:
The Second Avenue Street Fair extends from Seventh Street to 11th Street, unless there's an afternoon shift later. Mainly the same traveling band of commercial sellers with stuff and tchotchkes (crystals, bonsai, baskets, bowls, rugs, jewelry, etc.) that clogged the former street fairs. If you're looking for new food experiences or any local vendors, you will be disappointed, as was I. I searched in vain for "The Pickle Guy." Sad, but it's a start.
Yes! Welcome back... and maybe THIS will be the year you buy the "Scarface" poster you've been eyeing for the past 15 years...

Sunday and the street meat will be sizzlin': 1st street fair since 2019 slated for 2nd Avenue

After a two-year pandemic hiatus, a street fair is returning to our local, um, streets ... Sunday (tomorrow!) sees the Second Avenue "EV" Festival between Fourth Street and 14th Street... and it's an opportunity to make up for lost time by buying a lot of tube socks, fake pashminas, NY ❤️ me tank tops, funnel cakes, turkey drumsticks, corn dogs, Italian sausage and ...

'Fall Into Love' at Middle Collegiate Church's street fair on 2nd Avenue

Tomorrow (Oct. 12!) Middle Collegiate Church hosts the Second Avenue Street Fair: "Fall Into Love."

Here's what you can expect between Noon and 5 p.m. along the Avenue (from Sixth Street to 14th Street):

Children and families can enjoy fall-themed activities like pumpkin painting, art projects, a bounce house, tie-dye t-shirt making, and a bubble station, in addition to local vendors. The Jerriese Johnson Gospel Choir, the Village Chorus for Children and Youth and other local artists will be offering entertainment in front of Middle Collegiate Church.

The Second Avenue Street Fair was started in the 1980s as a way to raise money for the "Celebrate Life Meal," the free meal the church offered to those living with HIV/AIDS. The meal continues today in partnership with The Momentum Project. Proceeds from the Second Avenue Street Fair benefit the pride ministries of Middle Collegiate Church.

A street festival for your Saturday

Vendors and other volunteers are prepping for the Cooper Square Committee's annual Third Avenue Festival, which takes place today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As noted in previous years, this is one of the better street fairs.

Aside from some of the usual stuff (see photo below), the festival features a variety of live performances from a stage at St. Mark's Place at Third Avenue. The acts include Kate Brunotts, Chanese Elifé, the Rod Rodgers Dance Company, Bill Popp and the Tapes and Cherry Sol.

With all this, Third Avenue is closed from Sixth Street to 14th Street.

Today, on 3rd Avenue, a street festival

Indeed. From 14th Street to Sixth Street.

At this hour, belts were the only thing available for purchase...

Other vendors were still setting up the tents and putting together the mannequins...

... and firing up the deep fryers...

The Cooper Square Committee is today's street festival (avenue festival?) host.

And as far as street festivals go, this is one of the better ones...

Today in street-closure planning

The Fourth Avenue Festival is happening now (Street fair!) ... and the Avenue is closed from Ninth Street to 14th Street ... coinciding with NYU's Move-In Day.

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

This one is called Pride on Astor... taking place on Astor Place from Lafayette to Broadway.

Here's a description via the Facebook event page:

Experience the 20+ Authentic food booths, Browse the 50+ merchandise booths that sell a huge variety of goods that range from handmade metal statues to African baskets to the year's hottest trends in jewelry & fashion accessories and much more.

There's also a variety of butter for the corn...

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

Just after 8 a.m., the NYPD put up the barricades on Third Avenue at 14th Street ... to block traffic as crews begin setting up for!

It's the annual Third Avenue Festival sponsored by the Cooper Square Committee... and one of the better sessional street fairs, as far as seasonal street fairs go.

At this hour, the various vendors were just setting up...so [in a rather apologetic tone] no sneak previews today...

The festival is noon to 5 p.m., from 14th Street south to St. Mark's Place.

The Second Avenue Street Fair is tomorrow (Saturday!)

As far as street fairs/festivals go around here, the annual one hosted by Middle Collegiate Church is a good one, with the community spirit absent in those just with the funnel cakes and tube socks.

Via the EVG inbox...

Join us for our annual Second Avenue Street Fair on Saturday, May 6, 12-5pm! Children and families can enjoy activities like a bounce-house, tie-dye t-shirt making, sidewalk chalk, bubble station, Japanese calligraphy, and more!

From 1-5pm, hear live music on the Middle Church stage featuring celebrated East Village musicians, including the Jerriese Johnson Gospel Choir and Village Chorus for Children & Youth. Voter registration and election information will also be available on our block. It’s an all-day party with Middle Church, filled with art, justice and music — you won’t want to miss it!

And this is not the first street festival of the season... that happened on April 9 with the Astor Place Festival ... and there was the Broadway Festival on April 15 on Broadway from 14th Street down to Eighth Street...

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

Rocktober is kicking off in fine fashion ... with a street fair/festival on Third Avenue from Astor Place to 114th Street 14th Street.

EVG deputized Street Fair correspondent OlympiasEpiriot shared the above photo.

As noted last week, the de Blasio administration is proposing changes to the city’s street fairs to make them less tube socky and generic.

Report: de Blasio administration looking to make street fairs less generic, more local

[EVG file photo from either 2015, 2014, 2013...]

Let's just jump right into Politico's story:

Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration is proposing changes to the city’s street fairs intended to end the corporate flavor of many of the festivals, addressing a long-standing complaint from civic groups and elected officials that the fairs are a costly headache and do little to benefit the communities where they’re held.

Under proposed rules scheduled for a public hearing on October 13, at least fifty percent of vendors participating in a street fair would have to be businesses with locations inside the same community board where the event is being held. That proposal marks a major change that could remake the character of the roughly 200 street fairs the city currently allows each year.

The proposed changes must undergo a period of public comment before being approved. If that happens, then street fairgoers may find more than tube socks and tube steaks during High Street Festival Season next year.

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

The sausage truck was rolling in early this morning for the [Generic] street fair/festival of mozz sticks today on Fourth Avenue between East 14th Street to Ninth Street or so.

Workers were still setting up for the day...

So I uploaded this post courtesy of the new @LinkkNYC kiosk on Fourth Avenue at 12th Street while waiting to shop...

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

The 2016 Street Fair/Festival continues today with another Street Fair/Festival on Second Avenue. (Just like last week.)

Unfortunately, as always, we arrived too soon. So browsing was difficult because there was still traffic zipping down the Avenue ...

By the time we strolled a few blocks to the south, though, the barricades went up and the traffic was stopped... affording the opportunity to bike down the middle of the Avenue just like any other day...

We only spotted one food option so far: sweet corn on the cob (Have you ever seen a restaurant with a Sweet Corn on a Cobb Salad?)...

Officially, this is the Two Bridges Neighborhood Council-St. Stephen Our Lady of Scapular Co-Sponsored Fair.

Second Avenue is closed from 14th Street to Sixth Street. The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

P.S.

It's fine to bring your pets, but please keep them on a leash so they don't get away...

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

The 2016 Street Fair/Festival season kicks off in high style today with the Second Avenue Festival along Second Avenue between East 14th Street and East Fourth Street...

Security is tight this year...

As always, we were on the scene too early, and there were several awkward moments where we thought the vendors setting up for the day might ask us for help...(Sorry, can't lift anything: tight hip flexors!)

As for the food options, so far we can exclusively reveal empanadas ...

... and Germany well be well-represented...(And Christmas in May! You threw away your trees too early!)

ATTENTION BRATWURST PAVILLION....

If you can't make it today, then don't despair: The Third Avenue Festival is next Saturday.

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

Several readers recently noted that there haven't been quite as many street fairs/festivals this summer around here.

Hopefully we can squeeze in 5-6 before Labor Day weekend. Cross one off the list, as a fair/festival is slated today on Fourth Avenue, roughly from East 14th Street down to East Ninth Street.

The avenue was still open to vehicular traffic when we passed through… where a lonesome sausage stand stood…

The 2nd Avenue Festival is today (on 2nd Avenue)

Today's street festival is brought to you by the Cooper Square Committee.

Technically, yes, it is a Street Fair! But there are some local businesses involved, aside from the usual stuff (tube socks, fried calamari in a hoof, etc.).

As for local businesses, B&H Dairy owners Fawzy and Ola Abdelwahed will be selling T-shirts, as they did during the Second Avenue Street Fair back on May 9...

[Photo from May 9 by Derek Berg]

B&H has yet to reopen after the deadly gas explosion on March 26.

The festival is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today… from East 14th Street to East Sixth Street.

The first Zeppoles-Funnel Cake-Leomonade-Fruit Punch truck was just setting up when we were touring the Festival grounds walked by this morning …

… here are two shots of vendors setting up via Derek Berg…
