A barricade-free chess experience in Tompkins Square Park now possible

The area around the chess tables inside the 7th and A entrance to Tompkins Square Park is now barricade free.

EVG reader Joann Falkenburg noted this scene yesterday...
The tables had been (mostly) behind barricades since the fatal double shooting here last July. In September, D.A. Bragg's office anounced the indictment of two men for their alleged role in the shooting that 74-year-old Fermin Frito. A second man was also shot in the ambush that erupted over a reported drug turf war.

Hopefully this spot — sometimes referred to as the "crime corner," at least in the EVG comments — can remain barricade-free moving forward.

With the barricades removed and field house renovations finished, Tompkins Square Park is now fully open to the public.

Yes, I also hope that the homeless and park junkies do not move in like last time and take over all the chess tables to use as their personal furniture. NYC Parks Enforcement and NYPD need to patrol that location regularly to keep that from happening again.

Walked by there yesterday, all seats were taken & some of the 'regulars' were there as well. Still wouldn't sit there.

Now more than ever we need to have grace toward all of our neighbors, which also includes the unhoused and the addicted. Everyone deserves a seat. Granted, it's unfortunate when people move in and remain (and which sometimes leads to unlawful behavior), but like I said before, the park is for everyone. It's sad to read our neighbors complaining in advance about those less fortunate. But sadly, those are likely the same types who would gleefully line up to turn people into ICE or the cops. HEAL YOUR HEARTS.

that was so retarded that they blocked off the only tables in the park for everyone because something happened in that area
