Crunch Bowery opens with a preemptive 'there goes the neighborhood'

Crunch Bowery opened for business yesterday … and they are apparently making a funny with the "there goes the neighborhood" line …

The Crunch around the corner on Lafayette will close soon … because! As BoweryBoogie reported on May 16, 708 Broadway/404 Lafayette is being converted into a — ding! ding! — hotel!

Crunch branding back on the Bowery

We first saw the coming soon signs for Crunch in the long-vacant retail space at 2 Cooper Square last July. Then that signage all went away… and we wondered if the gym was still opening a location here on the Bowery and East Fourth Street.

Yes, as you can see from the Crunch signs that went up last week…

There's also a Crunch Bowery website showing the floor plans.

Crunch announces itself to the Bowery

As we first reported on May 31, Crunch is moving from its current home on Lafayette Street to the Bowery and East Fourth Street — specifically the retail space at 2 Cooper Square... The storefronts here have been vacant since the apartments hit the market in 2009 ...

And in other gym news... Crossfit East River opens today on East Ninth Street near Avenue C.

Crunch moving to the Bowery; CB3 OKs New York Sports Club on Avenue A

The retail space at 2 Cooper Square has been empty since the apartments hit the market in 2009... apparently it won't be empty for too much longer... EVG reader Axis of Eville commented yesterday
that the Crunch gym on Lafayette was moving here to the Bowery and East Fourth Street in September.

And the city issued permits last week for Crunch signage here...

On the topic of gyms... As we noted last month, New York Sports Club was aiming to take over all of the floors above Gracefully on Avenue A near East Second Street...

... this moved a step closer to happening after Tuesday's full CB3 meeting ... CB3 approved "the BSA special permit application by New York Sports Club to operate a physical culture establishment/health club at 28-30 Ave A on the 2nd thru 5th floors with entrance on the 1st floor." The DOB still needs to approve the work permits. No timeline just yet when all this would happen...

Gold's Gym Crunched

There was a Gold's Gym on John Street in the Financial District....then one day a few months back, it disappeared behind some plywood, and gymgoers had to enter through a different doorway...and then overnight this week it became a Crunch.

Speaking of 13th Street

I had no idea that Crunch closed this location between University and Broadway. I was told it happened in early March.
