@bonatron9000 made an unhappy discovery this morning:
"
Itzocan Café — the delicious French/Mexican restaurant on Ninth Street near Avenue A — is shuttered with a sign thanking customers for their years of patronage."
As you can see, the space is already for rent...

Sadly, I expect to see an "extra" strong flurry of closings as we reach the final days of the year. More than your usual random monthly lease expirations.
Agreed, anon ... I think we'll see several more like this in the next few days...
That's a shame, we loved this place.
I think I've been here too long. That has always been 'the new fancy Mexican' place in my mind.
It's all relative. I can't believe Life Cafe is gone. I'm sure Itzocan had a similar place in other folks' hearts.
Life Cafe is gone?!
you spelled it wrong
when we walked past this last night we thought how we wished we'd eaten here more. we loved it. the food phenomenal and the people so very nice. note for the new year: patronize neighborhood favorites more in 2012.
Sadness! I lived on the other end of the block (toward 1st Ave) for 14 years. Should have dined there more often.
What a shame. The food was great and the people very sweet. The interior was very cool. I hope they have their larger place in East Harlem.
I made this sad discovery tonight as I walked across 9th Street. Itzocan was my very favorite restaurant. Having lived in NYC for 24 years, this is not the first time for such an experience, but I seem to feel extra sad about this. I wish I had gone more often to support what I appreciated so much. I wonder if this is a sign that it's time for me to move on. Their Mexican food was faithful to the ingredients and cuisine of Oaxaca, yet prepared with some of the refinement they took from previously working in French kitchens. I hope I can find them opening up somewhere else in the city. It can't end like this! :-(
