As we've pointed out, Jane's Sweet Buns on St. Mark's Place has been closed of late...
Now, Grub Street gets confirmation that Proletariat, the 10-seat bar that opened in the back of the Bunnery in May, is taking over the full space... and they will open in the expanded storefront tomorrow.
In addition, the bar will eventually add a food menu that includes beer-steamed mussel buckets, baked clams and "more beer-friendly fare," Grub Street reported.

This should be immediately investigated by the State Liquor Authority as the approval by CB 3 was for a bakery with beer and wine, not a beer bar. I hope people take note of this when they think about supporting or opposing new liquor licenses in our neighborhood. This stuff happens all the time. Look at what the Beagle is doing now, they were supposed to be a full service restaurant and now they are marketing themselves as a high-end cocktail lounge. So many of these applicants seeking liquor licenses are simply wolves in sheeps clothing.
An amazing end run around the community board. I'm going to open a knitting shop, add a bar, then close the knitting shop. well played.

That's two new bars on this block, sandwiching the middle school. The old "why curry" space just became a bar as well.

Call me crazy but why would a bakery even qualify for a beer/wine license in the first place?
This is outrageous. What scumbags. I'd suggest that residents boycott this guy's bars, but I just remembered that residents don't actually go to his bars. They're for tourists and other assorted bargoers who treat our neighborhood like a toilet.

Also (cuz apparently I'm the resident crank about bar concepts :p): "Proletariat," seriously? Romanticizing a class of people who have to sell their labor to survive? Bourgeois idiots.
Isn't the whole point of a having a secret or speakeasy bar is for it to be secret? Do patrons still have to give a wink and a nod, and just glide on through the door to the right of the counter when walking in the now expanded storefront?

While certainly not a fan of the ol' bait & switch and not a patron of his other bars, I did check this out recently because I like beer and am a sucker for a good beer bar. It was surprisingly mellow, with nary a "whooo!" to be heard. Prices are high but selection was pretty amazing if you're into that sort of thing. I was talking to the bartender who said that Jane's just wasn't making it financially (really? a single concept food shop can't keep up with EV rents? who could have seen that coming?). I'm bummed that they couldn't at least keep the shop in the front, though, as I indulged in those buns from time to time... Wonder how long the pudding place will last. They'll probably start spiking the pudding and then remove the pudding and only serve the alcohol in your bowl.
Also bummed about Why Curry closing. Tried to order take out the other week but there was no answer and when I later walked by, saw that they had closed.
