Proletariat opens today in new 7th Street home

Proletariat opens today in its new home at 21 E. Seventh St.

As we first reported in April, the craft beer bar was relocating here between Second Avenue and Cooper Square from 102 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.

The larger Proletariat space will feature "a huge staple of rarely-seen beers in cans, large format bottles, and via a rotating tap selection from some of the most boutique breweries and brewers around the world."

There will also be a menu of plant-based English pub fare via Chef Ben Dawson.

You can follow @proletariatny on Instagram for updates. Opening hours: 5 p.m. to 1 a.m.

No. 21 was previously Porsena.

Proletariat and Cadence on the move to larger East Village spaces

Proletariat closed last night after service at 102 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.

The craft beer bar is moving to a larger home at 21 E. Seventh St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square — the former Porsena space. (Porsena closed in August 2020 after 10 years in business.)

Ravi DeRossi, the owner of the plant-based Overthrow Hospitality, recently told us that "the new, bigger snd better version of Proletariat" will feature a full dinner menu, with vegan versions of burgers, bratwurst and fried chicken sandwiches as well as "a much larger list of rare, new and unusual beers curated by Ramon Hung of the original location."

DeRossi said the new space is ready to go — they're just waiting on the liquor license.

Meanwhile, Overthrow's Cadence is also on the move...
The vegan soul-food restaurant overseen by Chef Shenarri Freeman at 122 Seventh St. between Avenue A and First Avenue also closed after service last night.

DeRossi told us via email that Cadence is moving across Seventh Street to the space adjacent to Ladybird (The storefront had been serving as a second outpost for Ladybird and was previously several other concepts for Overthrow.)

The larger Cadence is expected to debut on May 4, he said.

And what will become of the now-former Cadence space? DeRossi also planned to annex the adjacent storefront

"The Cadence space will be turned into a raw vegan restaurant and the space next door, where we were originally going to expand Cadence, will become a vegan wine and dessert bar," DeRossi said.

Cadence opened in the spring of 2021 and drew praise from Pete Wells at the Times, who gave the place high marks, noting: "In the increasingly crowded world of vegan and vegetarian restaurants, Cadence occupies a niche of its own."

Sweet Jesus

We'll have some more details about last night's CB3/SLA meeting tomorrow some day... one quick highlight. As you may recall, CB3 OK'd a wine-beer license for Jane's Sweet Buns on St. Mark's Place last fall. At the time, owner Ravi DeRossi assured the skeptics about the concept of a bakery serving alcohol. All just to pair wine with the buns and desserts.

"It was never intended to be a bar," he said of Jane's, according to coverage in The Local last October. "It's completely innocuous and an asset to the community."

In June, Jane's closed, and Proletariat took over the whole space as a bar.

All this was apparently news to CB3, who reportedly never received any notification about the new bar. Last night, Team Proletariat went before the committee with the alteration request.

And now Grub Street picks up the action:

After committee chair Alexandra Militano called the shift in business a "ruse," the board unanimously voted to deny Proletariat's request for an alteration to lengthen its bar. Before the vote, committee member David McWater told the crowd, "I wouldn't vote for this alteration if Baby Jesus came down here."

Jane's Sweet Buns officially closed; Proletariat taking over space

[June 20]

As we've pointed out, Jane's Sweet Buns on St. Mark's Place has been closed of late...

Now, Grub Street gets confirmation that Proletariat, the 10-seat bar that opened in the back of the Bunnery in May, is taking over the full space... and they will open in the expanded storefront tomorrow.

In addition, the bar will eventually add a food menu that includes beer-steamed mussel buckets, baked clams and "more beer-friendly fare," Grub Street reported.

Has Jane's Sweet Buns closed?

In the last few days, multiple readers passed along word that Jane's Sweet Buns on St. Mark's Place no longer appears to be in business. In early May, the sort of secret 10-seat bar called Proletariat opened in the back of the establishment at 102 St. Mark's Place.

Per a reader the other night: Went "to get some pastries and the shop wasn't open. Bartender at Proletariat said [Jane's] was closing due to poor sales."

We called the number for Jane's, but it has been temporarily disconnected. The shop was also closed during its announced hours of business this weekend. There aren't any notes about a closure on the Jane's website or Facebook page.

We emailed owner Ravi DeRossi for comment on Saturday morning to see what's officially happening with Jane's.

Meanwhile, Proletariat remains open for business.

Jane's Sweet Buns opened last July in the former De La Vega Museum space, selling a handful of desserts made with alcohol, such as the Rum Runner (a bun glazed in aged rum, Galliano liqueur and cinnamon, among other ingredients).
