This morning, workers installed a new awning outside the former Holiday Cocktail Lounge at 75 St. Mark's Place.
And it's an exact replica of the previous awning...
Back in July, some dude on a skateboard came by and slashed the name off of it.
The new awning is the next step for the new venture here. As previously reported, Barbara Sibley, the owner of La Palapa next door, will help run a tavern-restaurant in this space.
First, though — the building had to undergo a top-to-bottom renovation. And it has taken awhile. Sibley has firsthand experience — she lives in the building. She talked to us about it back in January.
The building was in terrible condition ... It’s been such an exercise in zen and archaeology. As much as we’ve been trying to maintain it, you couldn’t keep everything. We were lucky on their closing night that we didn’t all fall through. Every time we look behind a wall it’s been a major repair. It’s been an endless process.
The Holiday 2.0 closed Jan. 28, 2012.
No word yet on an opening date... but the new place will go by the name the Holiday.

A tavern-restaurant called One For the Frog will also be taking over at the space formerly occupied by Preserve 24. Pool on what this tavern-restaurant will be called.

In Jeremiah's Vanishing New York, it stated that the new owner did not win the rights to use the name Holiday Cocktail Lounge. So how is it named the Holiday then? This does not seem right.
Won't be surprised if they name this Howliday -- to immortalize both Ginsberg and Madonna, two of its regulars.
Upon research, Mr. Ehrlich did not win the rights to name it the Holiday Cocktail Lounge. This is a breach of contract. Wealthy people think they can do whatever they want. My east village friends and I will not be a customer in this new establishment. HONOR has died along with the real Holiday Cocktail Lounge.
At a meeting of Community Board 3′s S.L.A. licensing committee last night, Robert Ehrlich, who purchased the building at 75 St. Marks Place from former owner Roman Lutak, and Barbara Sibley, who will manage the spot, confirmed that their restaurant will not keep the Holiday’s name, dealing a final death-blow to the beloved bar. The local East Village dated Feb. 14,2012. Enough said, so much for honor Ms. Sibley.
The new owner was legally not allowed to use the name Holiday Cocktail Lounge and he knew it. But he did it anyway. Another example of money don't but you class. My wife & I were regulars at the real Holiday Cocktail Lounge for decades. It was a wonderful place ran by a wonderful family. We will NEVER patronize this new fraud establishment.
