The city this morning deemed it necessary to remove the Callery pear tree from outside 26 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.
Yesterday morning, a large branch fell, which, miraculously, missed the pedestrians and vehicles in the vicinity.
According to this site, the "Callery pear has a weak wood and branch structure ..." The tree appeared to show signs of rot.
Here's a look at what's left behind...

Dearly Beloved is so true!!! Many love you as we have lived our lives with you.
Love this!
A few months before this tree "died" someone paved over the soil surrounding the tree. II noticed it right away - who would pave around a tree - that's how the tree gets water! No other trees on the block were ever paved around. Maybe this tree did not die a natural death. Hope someone can find out who paved over the soil - maybe this tree was murdered.
