Zohran Mamdani photo from Oct. 24 at the Parkside Lounge by Stacie Joy
As you likely know, Zohran Mamdani will be NYC's 111th mayor. He also becomes the first Muslim and person of South Asian descent — as well as the youngest in over a century — to hold the position, per NPR and other published reports.
With nearly 90% of the expected vote counted, the Associated Press reports that Mamdani has 50.4% of the vote ... while former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has 41.6% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has 7.1%.
Mamdani had the highest margin of victories in these Manhattan neighborhoods: Morningside Heights (+49), Hamilton Heights (+47), Harlem (+45) and the East Village (+42).
An extraordinary number of voters turned out for both Mamdani and Cuomo. All told, more than two million New Yorkers cast their ballots, close to double the turnout of recent races and the most since 1969. Mamdani was propelled to victory by the votes of more than one million New Yorkers — more than any winning candidate in at least the past 20 years.
In the race for City Council District 2, Harvey Epstein won by a wide margin, garnering more than 78% of the vote, followed by Republican Jason Murillo and independents Allie Ryan and Gail Schargel.
In District 1, Christopher Marte was re-elected with 72% of the vote over Republican Helen Qui.
The other major races played out as expected:
• Comptroller — Mark Levine
• District Attorney – Alvin Bragg
• Manhattan Borough President — Brad Hoylman-Sigal

Beautiful Christie St Garden isn't part of the EV, but what jeopardy is it is in now - and what other city owned properties that are currently community gardens in the EV will be targeted for development for city owned housing... can EVGrieve keep tabs on this please?
oops... meant Elizabeth ST Garden on last comment - plz correct...?
what part of the election puts the community gardens at risk?
Mamdani already said he won't protect Elizabeth Street Garden. And for a long time the city has had its eye on community gardens for development.
*yawn*
Get ready for Mayor Jumaane Williams to take over. Once Mamdani discovers what it is like to have a real job and actually work every day, he'll decide to pick up his marbles and go home.
most important these days is that no republicans won
Quality of life will drop, very sad
The takeover by trust-fund hipster transplants is now complete.
Yes Liz Christie Garden is at risk as well as Elizabeth St Garden as are the gardens on E. 6th Street and 11th St.and the other 550 community gardens in NYC.whose property is owned by the city. With the passing of Props 2,3 & 4 there will be no oversight by the City Council on Big Real Estate as long as the Mayor approves.projects. The mayor will form an group to over see the plans but of course they will echo his approvals. There will be no one challenging using garden land for building and whether there is an appropriate number of affordable units, green space, community benefits, etc.
Get ready for the Concrete Jungle.
Thanks for your input Staten Islander, or Jumaane Williams’s mom. Meanwhile, being an Assemblyman, introducing legislation, and going on a 15 day hunger strike to secure a win for cab drivers remains an important job!
MAGA* trolls say what at this thread?
*Just look at the list of the players who endorsed Cuomo. POS all. EOS. Cuomo went to the fear/hate gutter at the end of his campaing. Mamdani is far from perfect ( I am not a political cult follower) but look at the choice of candidates. And remember, voting is binary. And he's not corrupt. And Silwa, to his credit, did not take the blood money (he claims) and drop out.
Unfortunately people are the ones that will suffer while he's learning on the job.
Is it too early to recommend that there is a Mamdani Derangement Moderator to take down idiotic hyperbolic fear-mongering posts? He's not even been sworn in yet and the freaks are swarming.
If you heard Mamdani's acceptance speech... the man bears grudges against the powers that be holding down the immigrants of today... the non Western European immigrants in low paying jobs and keeping them from power. We have. a president who is all about grievance and revenge. And now have a mayor who bears grudges against the very people who made NYC great over the last 100 years.
Lotta doom and gloom here and you’re Man’s not even sworn in yet!
Should we just let Adam’s stay in office?? Or perhaps we should give it to Cuomo?
🤦♂️
Very suprised at the venom being spewed at our new Mayor by residents of the EV who can't honestly think things in our hood are going in the right direction under Adams or would be better under Cuomo who sold his sole to Trump and the billionaire class. The comments about the gardens are classic fear mongering, as the majority of the gardens in our hood are protected as long as they follow the rules as community gardens. For Elizabeth Street, the facts are the facts. This is owned by the City and was used for years by a guy to store his landscape sculptures when he wasn't holding private velvet rope parties for the haughty haughty. It only became a "curated garden" when the City announced it was going to develop affordable housing for seniors. The developers made huge concessions on the number of units to create a very nice size public garden. The alleged deal that would bring even more housing will never happen as most of those sites do not belong to the City. Its shameful that the rich and famous squashed a development that would have housed low income seniors, who are according to all statistics one of our most vulnerable populations when it comes to affordable housing. Give our new Mayor a chance to create a more affordable and equitable City. If he doesn't declare your candidacy for Mayor and see what you can do. Oh and I am a 30 year resident of the EV, and a born and raised NYer who grew up during the 70s and 80s and imo things are worse now, because at least back then rent and restaurants were cheap.
He bears a grudge against his own grandmother, who opened her restaurant in NYC in 1986? I guess it was inevitable this thread would be an insanity magnet.
Even the Daily News didn't endorse him. That alone is telling enough without having to think that just because you have reservations you must be deranged.
The Daily News endorsed Andrew Cuomo, which is indeed telling, just not in the way you're trying to argue here.
Yeah what an embarrassing take. The man has done good work!
In what way? This seems like to opposite of what will happen. Oh wait, you must be a billionaire!
He’s a native New Yorker! All these anti comments are such a joke. Is that the idea?
Is it possible that we can finally stop seeing Cuomo’s gross face and hearing his grating voice saying stupid shit? I never thought the day would come. Hallelujah!
Is by “people” you mean “rich people,” you may be right
No. In all likelihood, it will be the "poor" neighborhoods which will suffer the most. As they always have.
The rich can insulate themselves from it.
@RJJ There is no evidence of this. Of what restaurant do you speak?
Socialism, politics of envy. Problem is you’ll run out of other people’s money
The man has done NO work. I had a more impressive resume when I applied for a part time night job in HS.
"Native New Yorker"? In spirit perhaps. Do you know what the terms Native" and "New Yorker" mean? Or what any words mean?
I'm sure he's a nice enough man but those words do not describe him.
