NYC Parks is kicking off the design process for a reconstruction project involving the Tompkins Square Park mini-pool and basketball courts — and there’s a virtual community meeting scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
According to Parks, the project will include a major change to the mini-pool: the current above-ground pool will be redesigned as an in-ground pool.
Parks is also inviting neighbors to weigh in on what they'd like to see as part of the improvements, with a focus on how this section of Tompkins can better serve the community.

Here's an aerial view of the area that will eventually be under-construction along 10th Street and Avenue B...
... and how it looked the other day before the snow...
In August 2024, Gov. Hochul announced nearly $150 million in capital grants through the New York Statewide Investment in More Swimming (NY SWIMS) initiative. As part of that, Tompkins Square Park was awarded $6.1 million for a new in-ground pool, which will double the capacity of the current above-ground trailer park model.
Other areas of the park have undergone renovations... last April, the field house and restrooms reopened after more than 18 months of rehab work.
In 2023, reconstruction of the multipurpose courts took place.

More rat proof trash cans please.
What changes to the mini pool?
I did not see it on the plan
How about they just finish some of the work they started in the 1980's?
There's still whole sections of shitty broken chainlink fence from the 60s-50s? that they never bothered to replace with the iron picket work that they installed during renovation at that time.

The parks dept is such a joke, super slow to do anything & everything. My local rec center has been under construction for years & it's not even that big.
Just no pickle ball courts.
They already renovated the courts a couple years ago
Everything is Perfect as is. But I'd change all the paths to cobblestones If you want to see what a well-cared park should look lie go take a look at Gramercy Park. I guarantee you their budget is a fraction of Tomkins Square.
Cobblestones!? No. Terrible to walk on. That’s romance and no sense talking.
Tompkins has a lot of issues (it’s gotten better imo the last 1+ yr or so) but comparing it to Gramercy isn’t fair, that’s a private park whose members are almost all certainly millionaires. Of course it’s in great condition.
Are there proposed changes to the basketball courts? Anyone with a conscience will oppose those with the full might and fury. At least I’d hope.
Keep basketball courts the same with no loss of square footage. Keep mini-pool just for young kiddies and their guardians with no change in size. And how are they going to keep the rats out of an in ground pool in one of the most rat infested parks in Manhattan? The advantage of the above ground pool was it was a bit harder for the rats to take a swim.
The mini-pool also will be doubled in size.
Not 'cobblestones'. Just the standard hexagonal park pavers that are in every other major city park. The same ones that they did put all around the outside of TSP back in the 80s, that have completely deteriorated since that time. Just this time, do it throughout the park. and this time, do it right.
Kill two birds with one stone and add tree guards to the surrounding trees for ~100k. That seems like a no brainer if they have $6mil in funding, even if it's earmarked for a different part of the park.
QUESTION : I missed the meeting - did anyone go? What was said? Do we know if the pool will be for the general public, not just kids? (For 5+ mil I hope so)?
Got to say, a pool that allowed adults (or adults hours) would be nice.
The pool will be for kids only, just with twice the capacity. Most of the comments were about not changing the basketball courts or the workout area when the pool is updated.
Neighbors—Nice job repping the neighborhood!
There were a lot of attendees.
Same basic refrain don’t fix what ain’t broke.
Seems like the pool will be enlarged. The money from the star is specifically earmarked for that. And if they do renovations to an area they have ADA requirements attached to it.
And many begs to figure out how to fix the park’s pathways. Unfortunately not part of the scope of the project—yet again.
But Parks did say they are aware…
Overall parks did a good starting job with this session.
I explicitly asked them to do on-site tabling
In the 10th & B section of the park. Not just an online session like that one. The design will be done by an outside group that was on the call.
Onlinecommenting period ends 2/13
