[Updating] Reports of a deadly shooting on 13th Street and Avenue B

We'll continue to monitor and update — as is often the case, initial details may change as more information becomes available. See below for updates.

April 28: Friends and neighbors remember the victim, 28-year-old Abdul Saleh, who worked at Sal's Deli & Grocery at this EVG post.

-----

There are unconfirmed reports of a fatal shooting late last night on 13th Street and Avenue B.

According to @ScooterCasterNY on X, police responded around 11:42 p.m. following a confrontation inside a deli that reportedly spilled out onto the street. Two men, both said to be 28, were shot. One of them died, per@ScooterCasterNY.

According to residents, the deli in question was 216 Sal's Deli & Grocery on the NW corner of 13th and B.

Per amNewYork, the victim, Abdul Saleh, worked at Sal's.

An EVG reader provided this account:
My wife and I were awakened by the sound of 2 or 3 shots at about 11:40 p.m., and saw from our window a wounded guy stumble to 13th Street and Avenue B. There were a couple of others trying to help him. Police came first and gave the wounded man initial treatment, and he was then put on an ambulance, which arrived a moment or two later.

To be honest, he looked quite bad — he had been screaming and struggling initially, but was motionless and quiet by the time he received first aid, seemingly including CPR.
The resident reported that both Sal's and their other deli, Brothers on 14th and B, were closed this morning.

Updated:

The NYPD remained on the scene early this afternoon... (photos by Stacie Joy).
There are also several candles outside the closed Sal's...
"I am confident in the quality of the detective work and expect to apprehend the subject soon," Deputy Inspector Pamela Jeronimo of the NYPD's 9th Precinct told EVG's Stacie Joy.

Jeronimo had worked the overnight crime scene.

When asked for more details, she stated: "I can't release any information because it could compromise our investigation."

Updated 5:20 p.m.

The memorial has grown for Abdul Saleh.
Emmad El-Hassil told the Post that Saleh was his cousin who had just returned from a family trip to Yemen.

"He just started working again today," El-Hassil said.

Hello, I am the one whose account was quoted. After reading/seeing the Scootercaster account, reading Citizens app, and speaking to my wife, I am now wondering if the people in the street that I thught were trying to help him (I thought I'd seen them trying to hail a passing car) were actually part of the altercation. One of them was indeed a big guy, dressed all in black who was then reported as fleeing on foot.

This is my hood. So grateful I chose to stay indoors due to the rain. Very scary. What kind of petty dispute would lead to a fatal shooting? Most violence against others is perpetrated by men, especially younger men. If only a few were able to emotionally regulate themselves, we might be able to co-exist in a safer world.

Abdul was the sweetest. My deepest deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones. So senseless and tragic. I can’t stop crying. He was an ace of a human being. May god bless him and everyone.

From several outlets reports it looks like they have the shooter already, he is the wounded person, shot by his own gun.

What a senseless crime. To think this young man was just returning to work after visiting relatives overseas. Life is so precious, short, and at times, unfair. Hope this cowardly murderer is brought to the fullest extent of justice. Condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. RIP, Abdul

You think that’s why other countries have many, many, many fewer deaths by gun violence, the men have developed emotional regulation skills Americans don’t have? It couldn't be that they have strong gun control laws and we don’t? The way we collectively choose to live in this country is degrading, and people like you, who cannot or will not see how their uninformed beliefs hold the rest of us hostage to ‘Murrican idiocy, have dominated national discussions and US media my entire life. (Media always obsesses over a motive, as if people in other places in the world don’t have motives to hurt others). It is so dispiriting, degraded, and regressive.

Thank you for covering this and condolences to Abdul’s family. Imagine being at work, doing your job, and being killed.

As East Village residents, this kind of violence (not targeted, spur of moment due to an argument) is concerning and unacceptable. We should call our Council Member Harvey Epstein’s office (212-677-1077 or mailto:District2@council.nyc.gov) to make sure they pressure the NYPD and DA to catch and prosecute those responsible. There are so many cameras around, so seems doable if there is enough attention, pressure, and concern around this crime in our neighborhood.

They have their wanted guy already. Council member has nothing to do with it. You don't need to pressure the NYPD and DA to catch and prosecute those responsible, they know what their job is.

I live a few building away and heard 3 gunshots last night and then the ambulances a few mins later. So tragic

Let's focus less on semantics and more on this beloved victim of gun violence. Such a young man. Absolutely heartbreaking for his loved ones and our community. So so sad.

NY1 just posted a three minute segment online pertaining to the shooter who has yet to be apprehended. There is a 5K reward for information leading to his capture. A news anchor spoke to residents who are grief stricken and in shock for what happened. There is also a nightly vigil commemorating his life. Hope they catch the monster who did this. Condolences to his family.

This is really such a heart-breaking tragedy. A hardworking young man, at the prime of his life with a beautiful family; cut down by a senseless, petty argument. The bodegas and the people who work them are really the backbone of our neighborhoods, so much more than the flashy places that open today and are gone tomorrow. When our daughter was growing up, we always told her to be friendly with the bodega staff and that - especially when she started going out at night and come back late - if ever she felt unsafe with someone following her, that she should go into one of the bodegas instead.

Why does everyone have to take a gun and or knife with them when they go out? Seriously - " Hey honey hold on, I gotta load my gun and grab my switchblade before we head out"

Based on the Q1 2026 crime statistics of a city-wide 139 shooting incidents, very few people in NYC (and even less in Manhattan) are carrying guns around. NYC residents are actually very safe from gun violence compared to most of the western hemisphere on a per capita basis

So sad. That bodega is right by the dog groomer, I was just in there the weekend before this one. Nice people.
