The 'No 7-Eleven' chalk campaign expands its reach; plus, drip art

The No 7-Eleveneers were at it again last night ...

... expanding their protest beyond the construction site at the corner of East 11th Street and Avenue A to the 7-Eleven at St. Mark's Place ...

...where a security guard sought to dissolve the protest with some water, creating the first piece of "No 7-Eleven" drip-art.

Incoming 7-Eleven franchise on Avenue A still in need of an owner

There has been a lot of discussion about the 7-Eleven being carved out of the former Bar on A and Angels & Kings on Avenue A and East 11th Street.

Current home of that remarkable plywood structure...

As for the construction, there hasn't been a whole lot of activity here in recent months. (Perhaps the building changing hands had something to do with this slowdown...?) Workers gutted and plywooded the space back in September. Work picked up again in December. Bobby Williams took a look inside the space last week...

Meanwhile, a reader the other day pointed out that this location was still on the market for an owner, per the 7-Eleven Franchising site. According to the site, the estimated opening date is May 2013.

Reader report: Unshoveled sidewalks in front of the incoming 7-Eleven remain treacherous

Yesterday morning, we noted that the plywood walkway outside the incoming 7-Eleven on Avenue A and East 11th Street was extremely slippery... causing someone to post the above warning note...

Apparently little has changed here.

EV Grieve reader VH McKenzie notes:

"The only building on the block of 11th between A and B that DIDN'T shovel any snow from the pathway in front of their building since Friday ... the site of the incoming 7-Eleven.

"What was a slippery, treacherous sheet of ice is now, thanks to the rain, an impassable small lake. Soon to be a slippery, treacherous sheet of ice again when the temperature drops."

Walking on the other side of the street is really a good idea.

Oh, wait.

Bwahahaha. Nice!

In the words of the immortal Torrance Shipman: "Oh, I'll bring it. Don't worry."

Updated:
To be clear, I had nothing to do with this. Just someone's idea of a gag.

The Hetal Convenience Store is now... 1 Eleven

[December]

The Hetal Convenience Store on First Avenue just south of East Seventh Street closed back in December... workers remodeled the storefront... and it recently reopened... then a new awning arrived the other day...

1 Eleven?! Kinda sounds like the name of some other convenience store, of course. The name is a play off its address, 111 First Ave.

[Updated] Reminders: Bodega Walk today

As we mentioned on Monday, the 'No 7-Eleven' Committee is holding a Bodega Walk today... here's more information via the inbox...

As part of our resistance against the incursion of 7-Elevens into the East Village we are inviting you to come with us on the first walking tour of our neighborhood bodegas. We love these corner stores and need them to stay open and intact.

When a 7-Eleven opens the bodegas nearby always take a hit, often a lethal one. During Sandy bodegas remained open and gave their perishable food away. Whole Foods didn’t. Will 7-Eleven? The existence of each of these unique bodegas supports the reality that our neighborhood is a social place and the city is our home. We will chant, read poems, share info about each store and buy stuff before we move on to the next. The walk will take about an hour ending at Tompkins Square Bagels.

Bodega Walk
Saturday February 2nd @ Noon
11th Street and Avenue A

Shawn Chittle created a Google map with the delis surrounding the incoming 7-Eleven on Avenue A and East 11th Street. You can access that map here.

And at DNAinfo, Serena Solomon wrote an article on the walk. You can read that here.

What we'd lose if we lost the neighborhood delis

7-Elevens and neighborhood delis/bodegas have been a popular topic around here of late. (Specifically here ... and here... and here).

Sarah Goodyear had a thoughtful post on the topic yesterday at The Atlantic Cities titled "Battle Cry for the Bodega."

A few quick excerpts on the positive influence of the bodegas/delis... (she also points out their downsides, such as the less-than-sanitary conditions at some stores... but...)

[T]here’s no denying that the texture of the city would be flattened if the idiosyncratic bodega became an endangered species. Not so much because of what the stores sell as because of the larger role they play in the community.

As an example, she cites a friend, a single mom raising a 10-year-old son. They live across the street from a bodega ...

... where a group of regulars spends the whole day either out front (if the weather is good) or by the cash register. Sometimes they drink a bit much, it’s true. But they are a living example of the "eyes on the street" that Jane Jacobs loved to talk about. My friend’s son feels safe walking home from school because he knows those folks are watching out for him, always calling out to him by name as he passes by.

If that bodega became a 7-Eleven, it’s hard to imagine that the inspectors from corporate headquarters would want those guys in the picture. That would be their loss. And everyone else’s.

Read the whole piece here.

Also, we'll have more info later on Saturday's Bodega Walk with the No 7-Eleven Committee...

[Updated] Window smashed at the 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place

Not sure at this time what happened here at the 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place... EVG friend Bonnie DeWitt sent these along this evening...

The window here was also smashed last April...

Anyone know what happened here tonight?

Updated 1-27
A clerk said that a "crazy street person" tossed what looked like a small weight or chunk of metal at the window. (The store has the object in its possession now.) No word on what led to the window attack.

Chalking up more 'No 7-Eleven' sentiment on Avenue A

A handful of hearty residents took to the frozen streets last night to create some more "No 7-Eleven" messages on Avenue A and East 11th Street ... site of one of the all-too-familiar franchise shops that will soon open in NYC ... A BBC crew was on-hand as well, documenting all this for an upcoming news segment...

...and from above...

Update on the 'No 7-Eleven' campaign, now with a Twitter account

You've read about the growing unrest regarding the 7-Eleven slated for the corner of Avenue A and East 11th Street... EVG reader Liberation, who is helping to organize residents, provided an update:

Our website team met this past weekend at the East Village Community Coalition offices to begin work on our forthcoming site, due to launch in the next few weeks.

The site will include profiles on local bodegas and how chain stores like 7-11 negatively impact their businesses and families, studies on how chain stores negatively affect local economies and cases where other communities have successfully fought back against chain stores and franchises, to name a few things.

While we prepare for our website launch people can connect with us now on Twitter at @No7ElevenNYC. In the next day or so we'll also be rolling out a new Facebook page. (Some people prefer one over the other so we want to provide options.)

We've set up various teams to support the project such as a research team, a street team and an education team. If people would like to get involved in one of these teams please email us here (no711nyc@gmail.com)

Meanwhile, the Observer and Crain's are the latest media outlets to report on this story.

And in case you missed this post from Saturday, the 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place is now delivering.
