[Updated] New installation on Astor Place that you can take for a spin

Uh, sorry... not the Alamo ... workers today put in a Citi Bike docking station on the under-renovation Cooper Square-Astor Place...

[V&O]

I believe they just relocated this one from in front of Kmart... (and wasn't there one in front of Cooper Union a few years back?)

Updated 7:55 p.m.

Citi Bike says that this is a temporary relocation... due to the construction outside the uptown 6 stop...

Sweetgreen opening on Astor Place

Work continues at 10 Astor Place between Broadway and Lafayette... where the signage arrived this week for another NYC location of Sweetgreen, the healthy quick-serve restaurant that offers various custom salads and grain bowls, etc.

No word yet on an opening date for this Sweetgreen. The company has plans to expand in NYC with at least four new locations citywide.

Reader report: Workers dig up streetcar tracks on 3rd Avenue

An EVG reader/tipster shared these images from last evening... where workers have been putting in a new roadway on Third Avenue between Astor Place and Ninth Street/Stuyvesant Street as part of the Astor Place Reconstruction project ...

The reader thinks that workers have unearthed the former streetcar tracks along here...

"In digging out the roadbed for Third Avenue near Stuyvesant crews uncovered what I believe to be crossovers for the Third Avenue and crosstown streetcars. It may be difficult to see in the photos but one axis runs east/west (Stuyvesant) and the other runs parallel to Third Avenue."

When the Stuyvesant and Ninth Street mini-parks were built I remember Stuyvesant Street tracks being dug out."

These crossovers are still so well anchored that workers couldn't pull them out. Per the reader: "The crew has been cutting them into small pieces. They are at it again today."

No word on how this might delay the project...

According to the Village Crosstown Trolley Coalition: "The 8th St. line ran its last streetcar on March 3, 1936, clearing the way for the crosstown bus and ever-increasing swarms of automobiles and trucks."

Off the Grid has some nice trolley history here.

More shade arrives for Cooper Square

Another sign of progress today in the ongoing Astor Place/Cooper Square Reconstruction Project... workers started planting new trees around the plaza area of Cooper Square as the above photo via EVG reader Mona W. shows.

As for when Astor Place's more famous tenant, the Alamo, will return... we now hear late May/early June. Workers packed up and carted off The Alamo for the duration of the reconstruction back on Nov. 25, 2014.

Here's a link to a weekly bulletin (PDF), noting what's happening this week.

The anticipated project completion date is now summer 2016, according to the reconstruction newsletter (PDF here).

Design apparently awakens the next few days on Astor Place

Yesterday morning workers started erecting that big tent/pavilion-y thing on Astor Place. (Despite a report on social media, this isn't the cube in a new shape.)

And as we will conveniently cut-n-paste from The New York Times:

A group of structures known collectively as Design Pavilion will take over the newly renovated Astor Place Plaza. Highlights include an installation by Snarkitecture for the condominium development 125 Greenwich Street; a structure designed by Harry Allen with the biomaterials company Ecovative; the DuPont Corian Blur Bar by Joe Doucet; and Growth, a show of new objects curated by the American Design Club.

Find the official site for A Design Awakening here. All this is is here through Wednesday.

As for the cube, the return date is late May/early June.

Thanks to Vinny & O for the photos and Marc for the links!

The all-new Astor Place is coming along (for real)

[Dawn of a new Astor Place era]

If you've walked by/around Astor Place in the last week or so, then you've likely noticed some actual progress as the reconstruction process plods along... In the next few photos, you can see the new permanent plaza on Astor Place adjacent to the Chase branch take shape ...

... and workers have added more details to the plaza...

As of late yesterday, part of the new plaza was open to pedestrian traffic...

For a little comparison, here's how things were looking here on Jan. 17...

As previously noted, plans for the multi-year(s) project have included reconfiguring/revamping the Astor Place/Cooper Square streetscape with three new permanent plazas, additional seating, trees and a new design for Peter Cooper Park.

Some day it will look like this...

[A rendering of the new Astor Place]

As for when Astor Place's more famous tenant, the Alamo, will return... there isn't any mention of the cube in the posted timelines. Workers packed up and carted off The Alamo for safekeeping for the duration of the reconstruction back on Nov. 25, 2014.

Here's a link to a weekly bulletin (PDF), noting what's happening this week.

The anticipated project completion date is now summer 2016, according to the Winter 2016 reconstruction newsletter (PDF here).

Catch 'Astor Barber All-Stars' tonight on PBS

[Production still by Phil Penman]

Tonight (Dec. 27!) at 11, WNET (PBS Thirteen) is airing "Astor Barber All-Stars," the documentary by Karen Gehres.

A summation of the film:

With so many NYC institutions dropping like flies, due to skyrocketing rent, one barber shop remains. Since 1939, Astor Barber has been cutting hair with pizzazz and is still one of NYC's most loved institutions. Get your hair cut from cradle to grave... literally! The Vezza family, their loyal customers and over 50 stylists working at Astor will show why this three-generation family-owned business attracts 'em all. It’s a story of endurance and a family, its employees and customers that stuck together against the odds in NYC.

Check out the trailer ...

The shop has been here since 1939. Jeremiah Moss wrote about it back in April 2012: "It's one of the last places in the East Village that still feels like the East Village. More than that, it still feels like New York City."

Astor Piano

EVG reader Daniel Root shares these photos from Astor Place... where one of the 50 Sing of Hope pianos is in place through June 21...

Franck de las Mercedes designed the piano's art.

His statement:

This piano is a celebration of the people and the arts of New York City. Growing up here, I was exposed to the visual clash of graffiti, decaying walls, torn-up ads, and the effect that time and the elements had on surfaces. Bright colors are an essential element in the piano in order to depict the diversity and fast pace of the city. I incorporated collage work using my photographs sketches, journal pages and scribbles on pieces of scrap paper. The piano also includes a "piano chords" chart to invite non-musicians to play also. Hoping this interactive and participatory experience with the work can perhaps become gateway into music, the arts and learning an instrument.

As we understand, this song is the most popular here outside the IBM Watson Building/51 Astor Place.

Remember the Alamo

While walking around Astor Place this morning... we were thinking that the crawler excavator was awfully close to the Alamo, aka the Astor Place cube... where work continues on the reconstruction of Astor Place...

Maybe someone else noticed...because workers later put up protective plywood around the Alamo for now...

And some day... the area will look like this...

Ashes to go on Astor Place

[Photo by Roger Jack Walters via Facebook]

Stray voltage alert on Astor Place

EVG reader Chris F. notes the arrival last evening of Con Ed cones and their new warning signs on Astor Place and Eighth Street…

Per Chris:

"However, despite the cones and caution tape, I didn't see any pedestrians avoiding the area — least of all the crew unloading goods for the Starbucks in back of the newsstand. Their tractor trailer was parked right in the 'danger zone,' and no one nearby seemed to be concerned."

Why Jerry's Newsstand will be closed for a few days

Been a pretty banner year so far for Jerry Delakas ... as the city gave him a new lease on the Astor Place newsstand that he has operated since 1987.

Unfortunately, as you can see in the above sign, there's a temporary setback. Jerry has bronchitis and won't be able to reopen the newsstand until he recovers.

City says Jerry Delakas can operate Astor Place Newsstand

[From the Save Jerry's Facebook page]

A long, contentious battle battle between Jerry Delakas and the city is over. There was talk earlier today that Delakas would be able to continue to operate the newsstand at Astor Place as he has done since 1987.

As Serena Solomon reports this afternoon at DNAinfo, the city has agreed to issue Delakas a license. One stipulation: He must pay a $9,000 fine over the course of the next year.

Per DNA:

"I think it shows a different stance on small business [under de Blasio], and a lot of those smaller businesses that have been set upon by city government should find this encouraging to fight back," said Advocates for Justice lawyer Arthur Schwartz, who is representing Delakas.

Delakas must pay the city $1,000 for a new license before he can reopen, plus the first $1,000 out of a $9,000 fine, according to legal documents.

He has to pay another $3,000 in May, $2,000 in August and $3,000 by Nov. 1, according to the documents.

The newsstand could be back open as soon as Wednesday.

As we first reported on Dec. 10, the city shut down the newsstand he has run the past 26 years for "operating illegally." Delakas never had the license transferred to his own name after the city blocked numerous attempts by the family who held the license to do so.

On Jan. 5, Mayor de Blasio promised to have his aides look into the situation with the newsstand.

A cut above — 'Astor Barber All-Stars' screens tomorrow night at the Anthology Film Archives

There's a screening of the documentary by Karen Gehres, "Astor Barber All-Stars," tomorrow night at the Anthology Film Archives.

Ahead of this, the Post has a feature on the film today … noting many of regulars through the years at the Astor Place Hairstylists, such as Mayor de Blasio and his son Dante.

De Blasio has frequented the Greenwich Village institution for about 30 years, according to John Vezza, one of the shop's co-owners.

"He's been coming since he was in college [at NYU]," Vezza said.

Hizzoner sits in Alberto Amore’s chair and practices his Italian on the Sicily native.

"He loves to speak in Italian. He calls me professor because I only speak in Italian," Amore said with pride. "He reads the paper in Italian. If there's a word he doesn’t understand, he says, ‘What does it mean, this.'"

Check out the trailer ...
