[Updated] Bank of America makes it temp signage official on 2nd Avenue and 7th Street

The new Bank of America branch is shaping up at 119 Second Ave. at Seventh Street... and now with temp signage ...

As we reported last Oct. 4, BoA will be the first retail tenant at the condoplex. 

According to an email from the bank:

Come see us at our new location. We have ATMs, banking, lending and small business associates, as well as financial advisory specialists, ready to help you with your banking needs. Opening date: 03/11/2024.

The new building was ready for occupancy in mid-2021... six years after the deadly gas explosion destroyed this corner in March 2015 and took the lives of Nicholas Figueroa and Moises Locón. 

This arrival means the closure of the BoA at 72 Second Ave. and Fourth Street, a space that has served as a bank branch since the building went up in the late 1920s as the Industrial National Bank.

In 2024, Bank of America will be moving on up on 2nd Avenue

Bank of America will close its branch on the NE corner of Second Avenue and Fourth Street on March 11, 2024, ahead of a move to a new financial center three blocks away.

As we reported on Oct. 4, BoA will be the first retail tenant at the condoplex at 119 Second Ave. at Seventh Street...

As for 72 Second Ave., that retail space has served as a bank branch since the building went up in the late 1920s as the Industrial National Bank. 

Daytonian in Manhattan has more on the history of the address:

The new building at the corner of Second Avenue and East 4th Street was completed in 1929 — just before the onslaught of the Great Depression. The architects had produced a startlingly different structure. While the base reflected the solid architectural elements expected in a bank — Corinthian pilasters separating rows of arched openings and a substantial bronze entrance surmounted by a clock — the upper floors exploded in color and fancy.

While the overall style was vaguely Renaissance Revival, the green and beige terra cotta spandrel tiles and the rope-twist engaged columns added an exotic air.  The arcade-like topmost windows, surmounted by a hefty balustrade at the roof, added to the Mediterranean feel.

Hopefully, the storefront will become something other than a smoke shop. 

A Bank of America is checking into the corner of 2nd Avenue and 7th Street

Interior storefront renovations are underway at 119 Second Ave. (aka 45 E. Seventh St.) ...

According to work permits on the front window, Bank of America will be the new (and first) tenant of this newish condominium complex ... (H/T Adam!)

This branch arrival comes at a time when banks are reportedly closing neighborhood locations. (Plus, there's a BoA branch three blocks south on Second Avenue and Fourth Street.)

Figueroa, 23, who had recently graduated from SUNY Buffalo State, was at Sushi Park, 121 Second Ave. between Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place and the site of the fatal blast, dining with a co-worker. Locón, 27, worked at Sushi Park.

The explosion injured over 20 others and leveled 119, 121 and 123 Second Ave. 

The previous corner building housed vintage shop Love Saves the Day for 43 years... closing in January 2009 after their rent was tripled. (Their location remains open in New Hope, Pa.)

Bank of America makes it official on East Houston

The Bank of America signage is up now on Eldridge and Houston.

This will be the latest branch from the Bank of America Corporation, an American multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in Charlotte, N.C.

This BoA arrives at a time when other branches have been closing in the area, including the two Capital Ones in the East Village. In recent years, Citi, Chase and Santander all shuttered their outposts on Avenue A.

This address, 147 E. Houston St., was previously a Pay-O-Matic check-cashing center.

147 E. Houston St. was previously a Pay-O-Matic check-cashing outpost. The new BoA will be joining next-door neighbor Il Mattone, which opened in May.

Today in great disguises for robbing a bank!

Earlier today, an EV Grieve reader sent along the following email:

"Not sure what's going on, but for the past 2 days, there has been an ARMED GUARD outside the Bank of America on 2nd Ave and 4th Street. Khaki pants, white polo shirt and a GLOCK on his belt. Just standing there."

Well! As DNAinfo reports, the man in the photo behind tried to rob the bank on Monday. He left empty-handed. "He is described as in his 40s, 5-foot-5 tall and weighing 180 pounds. He has dark hair and was last seen wearing a white shirt and carrying a black backpack."
