April 15

Yes. St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue this morning. With the stand intact, as the arrows helpfully point out.

EVG reader Andrew, who took the photo, asked if the prize would be given out in bitcoins.

No, it will not be given out in bitcoins.

Also, the ICTTSS wanted to recognize EVG readers Craig and Caelyn for spotting this beaut on April 7 (suspiciously) next door to the 9th Precinct on East Fifth Street...

Season's Greetings

As we head into the Easter holiday season, we just wanted to stop and wish all of you a Merry Christmas.

Spotted early this morning outside Gem Spa on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place.

EV Grieve reader Steven took this last evening around 6:30 on Avenue C at Ninth Street...

As he admits, "I didn't have a daily newspaper so I used one of the free ones from the box down the block. I took a close-up of the date too, for verification."

Resourceful in the opinion of this reporter.

Gruber MacDougal, spokesperson for the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS), is said to be monitoring the situation from the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo, where he is finalizing a white paper on the carbon content of international trade since 1990.

April 21

Just the other day, EV Grieve reader Riian submitted a fine entry ... However, some of you vicious bastards people weren't impressed since the thing was in a pot.

So, Riian strikes again on Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

This should certainly please the judges, though as a neutral observer, I cannot speak for the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS). Via text, ICTTS spokesperson Gruber MacDougal, currently in London preparing for the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, wrote, "Hi Grieve. TY 4t note. We'll ck out this Ntry. meanwyl, mrry xmas in April."

Here we are on East Sixth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... where Riian caught what may or may not be leftover from the Dec. 25 holiday. Still, Riian adhered to the strict ICTTS-sanctioned rules and had the thing in the pot tree photographed with the Sunday Times...

We reached out to Gruber MacDougal, chief spokesperson of the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS), for reaction. However, he was en route to a ICTTS corporate retreat on Sveti Stefan Island in Montenegro and unavailable for comment.

April 11

Slum Goddess, facing a 100-game suspension by the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS) for submitting a photo of what might have been an old potted plant the other day, unearthed this treasure early this morning near the Mars Bar.

And, without a newspaper, Slum Goddess displayed daring and ingenuity by using a dated ATM receipt to verify when she spotted this tree.

In a statement, ICTTS spokesperson Gruber MacDougal commended Slum Goddess' "grace under pressure" and "MacGyver-like MacGyverness."

However, the celebration may be short-lived. Per a reader earlier this evening: "just spotted a big- ass Christmas tree in front of 222 east 3rd st, avenues b and c. someone with a newspaper go shoot it!"

OK, this one may be difficult to beat... EV Grieve read Tom spotted this on 14th Street just east of Second Avenue yesterday ... and with the requisite newspaper for verification...

Meanwhile, we hear that the president and COO of the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS) will be giving a speech this week at Cooper Union, which will give us the chance to pepper him with questions...

April 9

Slum Goddess sent along this shot from East Ninth Street near Avenue C last evening. No newspaper for verification. However, an official from the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS) will pay a rare site visit today or next week for verification. I cannot say when exactly. The official wants to avoid a media frenzy. Also, the ICTTS may make an exception since Slum Goddess has been traumatized by a Cat Stevens record at work.

Meanwhile, in Jamaica, Queens... our friends at One Folded Sunset sent this along from Friday — with proper verification noted.

How all this will play out, only the ICTTS knows for sure.

[Updated] April 7

Rob D. spotted this on Houston today between Avenue A and Avenue B. And how about that newspaper for verification? "Didn't have a paper handy so I used my Petopia receipt. Hope it suffices in the eyes of the coalition."

Hmmm...

Via Skype, I spoke with an International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS) official who is currently investigating the authenticity of a 300-year-old tree found in Frankfurt (Germany). After hearing the explanation, the official said, "The Coalition respects and appreciates Rob's resourcefulness. There is something rather MacGyver-like about this. Of course we are also big Richard Dean Anderson fans."

Meanwhile, one reader thought that using a newspaper for verification purposes was a little "old fashioned" given that no one reads newspapers anymore. The reader asked if someone could use the front page of The Daily on an iPad instead.

The short answer, via the ICTTS: No.

Updated: Interesting development... EV Grieve reader Josh has now come forward with a similar sighting ...

But.

"Took a picture, but like Rob, no newspaper proof that it was today. If you look at the file name, which is generated by date and time, you get some solid proof! I don't care about this to the extent I would go changing file names... or do I?"

We're now sending this via a Coalition-immunity pouch to the ICTTS lab at or around Langley.

April 6

Well now. Our friend Goggla spotted this on Bleecker and LaGuardia a little earlier...

And she knows the rules. "I don't have a newspaper, but I have witnesses!" Per an International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS) official: "We may, indeed, call the witnesses to the stand if need by. So count this as officially counted."

April 1

EV Grieve reader Mike sent along this shot from First Avenue between Second and Third streets from late yesterday.

Once again, the shot lacks a newspaper cover for authentication purposes. However, the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS) will allow this tree to enter this year's competition. Why? According to one ICTTS official: "It's clear that this photo was taken from the street in either a fast-moving vehicle or on foot. Either way, we salute this bravery."

Hate to see the holidays come to an end

April 20 on East Ninth Street. Or maybe someone simply forgot they had a Christmas tree left up in their apartment.

Thursday, April 9, 2009

Just in time for Easter...

The Christmas decorations are still up outside Villaggio on Avenue C. near 11th Street.
