[Updated] April 29

Spotted near the 9th Precinct on East Fifth Street this evening.

Despite the lack of a newspaper to vouch for the date, we spotted Officer Tubbs leaving the station house... and he verified the sighting...

Updated!

Further proof comes via EVG reader Carol Puttre, who also spotted the tree...

Updated2!

All of this is moot... because we spotted this one today on East Fourth Street near Second Avenue...

Well, then! Goggla spotted this today on Second Avenue near East Fifth Street.

She did not include any kind of verification with the photo ... though she did mention something about "witnesses." (She has YET to produce said "witnesses.")

In any event, if it was up to us, then we'd go ahead and hand over the prize/award* for finding the latest discarded holiday/Christmas tree in the neighborhood.

However, there are rules, and all this is closely monitored by the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring (ICTTS). So we will wait for them to intervene just as soon as the trial ends.

Yes. St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue this morning. With the stand intact, as the arrows helpfully point out.

EVG reader Andrew, who took the photo, asked if the prize would be given out in bitcoins.

No, it will not be given out in bitcoins.

Also, the ICTTSS wanted to recognize EVG readers Craig and Caelyn for spotting this beaut on April 7 (suspiciously) next door to the 9th Precinct on East Fifth Street...

March 28

EVG reader Andrew spotted this beaut this morning on East Third Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...

While we mentioned the lack of any time stamp to prove that this is from today and not, say, Dec. 26 (is it? Please say no!)... we are allowing this one to stand, so to speak.

You see, under Evidence Rule 901, photographs are typically admitted as demonstrative evidence to illustrate discarded holiday/Christmas trees. When used purely as demonstrative evidence, legal issues regarding authentication are somewhat relaxed so long as a competent witness can testify that the photograph fairly and accurately depicts the tree about which he or she is submitting.

Wow. EVG reader Mark White spotted this yesterday on East Second Street between Avenue A and Avenue B. And we saw it with our own Google Glass eyes and can vouch for its authenticity.

Likely a record for waiting to toss out a tree.

And how did this conversation go down?

Let's go buy a Christmas tree today.

Great, but let's throw out last year's tree first...

First discarded Christmas tree of the season (aka FREE TREE)

Hurry now. Fourth Avenue between East 12th Street and East 13th Street. Still smells sorta piney.

So. For starters, EV Grieve reader Grant sent this photo along knowing that, perhaps, this tree might not be eligible because a) It's artificial and on Greene Street at Waverly Place (maybe beyond EV Grieve's boundaries?) ... and b) well, there is no b. Regardless, there is the Sunday Times for verification.

It's not up to us to decide these things. So we sent the information to Gruber MacDougal, spokesperson for the International Coalition of Tree Tossing in the Spring and Summer (ICTTSS). Unfortunately, he is at the Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa in Thailand for an elephant polo tournament and unavailable for comment.
