Closings on 14th Street: Amara Coffee, Dua Kafe

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Dua Kafe has closed at 520 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

While Google states the Albanian restaurant is temporarily closed, the space has been cleared out. A tipster informed us that the landlord sought a larger rent increase than the owners could afford and that they hoped to relocate to a different location.
There is a sign on the door that says, "For all deliveries, please talk to Johnny, the socks guy next door."

So I went next door and spoke to Johnny, the socks guy, who confirmed the permanent closure.
Dua Kafe opened here in 2018, offering a touch of homespun warmth amidst the impersonal chill of the EVGB retail-residential complex that flanks both sides of the address.

Meanwhile, closer to Avenue B, Amara Coffee closed several weeks ago...
From an Instagram post from April 7:
Thank you to each and everyone who came and supported us on our journey. We met incredible people who supported us and cheered for us. Sadly, we encountered difficulties and decided to close our doors.
The coffee shop, which debuted last May, also offered pastries and sandwiches and showcased the work of local artists.

The space was previously Perk Espresso & Coffee Bar

Dua Kafe is on a vacation

And in case a visit to Dua Kafe was in your plans this summer... the restaurant serving Albanian cuisine at 520 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B is on holiday ... starting last week and returning on Aug. 9.
Owner Bobian Demce, who moved here from central Albania in 2001, told Washington Square News back in the spring why he opened Dua in 2018
"Albanians in New York own a lot of the best restaurants in the city: steakhouses, Italian, Greek, French, you name it. But they never had the courage to open a place for their own culture, our own food — and it's very good. So that was the inspiration."

A report of a small fire at Dua Kafe on 14th Street

Updated the location of the fire. And an update via Dua: "We should be opening up again very soon (the plan is tomorrow!) since the damage was relatively minimal outside of the bathroom space."

On Wednesday night around 10:30, there was a report of a fire in the bathroom at Dua Kafe, 520 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B. (Thanks to EVG reader Russell K. for the top photo.

The FDNY reported an "under control" from the scene in less than 15 minutes. (Dua has a posted closing time of 10 p.m.)

EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by yesterday... fortunately there was little evidence of any fire, including smoke or water damage.

Workers at a neighboring business said that there was a small electrical fire in the back and "everything should be fine again soon."

In the meantime, there are there is a "closed for renovation" sign up at the restaurant specializing in Albanian cuisine (read a Times review of the space here) ...

Dua Kafe, serving Albanian-American cuisine, now open on 14th Street

Dua Kafe is now up and running at 520 E. 14th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B ... bringing a little homespun warmth to a block dominated by the impersonal chill of the EVGB retail-residential complex on either side of the address...

The menu, per the cafe's Instagram account, features Albanian-American cuisine with a variety of egg dishes and paninis ...

The hours don't appear to be set as the cafe remains in soft-open mode ... though regardless of the time, breakfast is served all day.
