The day before it was to rain all day

There is/was a strange energy in NYC today — a buzziness before tomorrow’s all-day rain. It feels a bit like the anticipation before a snow day — like work and school will be canceled.

And we need the rain. Per Bloomberg
The dry fall of 2024 was unprecedented, with only 1.59 inches of rain recorded in Central Park in September and October. October was the driest calendar month on record in Central Park, with only 0.01 inches of rain.
And for tonight into tomorrow evening...

It will be a dark and stormy night

NYC is under various warnings this evening, with heavy thunderstorms expected in the area.

Per The Weather Channel, NYC is under a flash-flood warning until 7:45 p.m.

And were were just at Key Food on Avenue A and Fourth Street where they played a solid pre-storm set featuring Eddie Grant, Fleetwood Mac and Irene Cara. What a feeling!

Noting, part 2

Weather watch continues...

Noting

Checking in again on the weather forecast... a sky check from 10th and B this afternoon.

Weatherman said rain. If you could get paid that kind of money for being wrong 60% of the time, it'd beat working. — Dale Cooper

Sunday's opening shot

Rain and wind expected throughout the day ... with the greatest chance coming around 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Speaking of wind, not to be alarming, but there is a GALE WARNING (!!!) in effect until 6 p.m. So this is not the day to see if the skiff might be seaworthy.

WHAT...Northeast winds 20 to 25 kt with gusts up to 35 kt and seas 2 to 4 feet.

WHERE...Long Island Sound west of Port Jefferson and New Haven, and New York Harbor.

WHEN...Until 6 PM EDT this evening.

IMPACTS...Strong winds will cause hazardous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Mariners should alter plans to avoid these hazardous conditions. Remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course, and/or secure the vessel for severe conditions.
Speaking of the Mariners, Seattle made the playoffs this year.

And now turning to the weather... as the National Weather Service puts it, expect wet, cool and breezy conditions today. Next up, sports....

Saturday so far, with the sharpening southward plunge of the jet stream

A few rainy morning scenes from Tompkins Square Park and Avenue A courtesy of Vinny & O...

As for this weather, we're having a nor'easter, per sources. As I understand it, and have noted before in similar situations, a sharpening southward plunge of the jet stream slid into the East as an area of low pressure strengthened near the East Coast.

This setup [motioning arms] is allowing rain to spread across the Northeast. Wet conditions will persist through today and into tonight. Cooler-than-average temperatures are also expected and it will feel chilly when combined with the wind. (Yes, I cut-n-paste that from The Weather Channel!)

When it was foggy early this morning

If you woke up today after, say, 9 a.m., then you missed the foggy wonderland that was NYC. It was almost like the set of "The Hound of the Baskervilles," except without the phantom pack of hounds baying across the moor.

Today's weather is unbearable

EVG reader @laurab0401 spotted the above today on Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B.

As for that weather... there are three alerts from the National Weather Service for NYC... there's a heat advisory, flash flood watch and air quality alert...

The city's cooling centers are open today.

The sun also rises at 3 a.m.

Andrew Adam Newman on Ave C points us to tonight's forecast at The Weather Channel... where something extraordinary will happen ... as he noted on Facebook, "If you're still up at 3 a.m. ... be sure to look up at the sun poking through the clouds."
