A new tree nest for El Jardin del Paraiso

In recent weeks, several EVG readers shared the news that a new tree nest is under construction in El Jardin del Paraiso, the community garden on Fourth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D.

Back in the summer, the octagonal treehouse that East Village resident Roderick Romero created in 2003 was removed...

Apparently a garden committee member thought the 16-year-old structure had become decrepit. (This article for the Times in 2003 has more background on Romero's structure.)

Romero is not behind this new work, which he complimented in an email.

The tree nest in El Jardín del Paraíso has been removed

The unique tree nest that surrounded a willow in El Jardin del Paraiso, the community garden on Fourth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D, is no more.

An EVG reader spotted the former octagonal treehouse broken up and lying in piles late last week...

East Village resident Roderick Romero created the structure in the fall of 2003. He also learned of its fate last week. No one from the garden, where he is a member, consulted him about the removal.

"It's horrible. It was a total surprise to me," he told me in a phone call.

Romero said that a garden committee member thought the structure had become decrepit, and started taking it down. When Romero saw what had happened — and what was remaining of the structure — he told the garden to just remove the rest.

"So many kids loved," he said. "Adults did too, but the kids got a lot of joy of it."

Romero, a well-known treehouse architect known for unconventional designs, has built structures for residential properties in the United States, Central America and Europe. This was his first treehouse in the "public domain," which he created at no charge to the garden. (This article for the Times in 2003 has more background.)

He said that he had done maintenance on the tree nest through the years and was unaware any structural issues.

The tree nest's departure reminded some residents of the removal of the Tower of Toys from the Sixth Street and Ave B Community Garden in 2008 a year after its creator, Eddie Boros, died. When told of this, Romero responded, "the only difference is I'm not dead."

Why El Jardín del Paraíso is temporarily closed

El Jardín del Paraíso, the community garden that spans the block of Fourth Street to Fifth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D, has been closed since late last week.

Here's what Kelly Krause, a press officer for the Parks Department, had to say about the situation:

El Jardín del Paraíso has been closed temporarily at the request of the NYPD due to recent criminal activity in the area, unrelated to the garden. We hope to reopen the garden in a couple weeks.

Thanks to @artisanmatters for the photo!

El Jardín del Paraíso loses its prized tree

[Photo by Annalee Sinclair via Facebook]

Ugh. The largest tree at El Jardín del Paraíso had to come down earlier this week... The tree in the community garden that spans the block of East Fourth Street to East Fifth Street between C and D was leaning, and some people worried that it could come down during a storm... Here's the scene yesterday via Goggla...

On Thanksgiving, remembering the turkey of El Jardín del Paraíso

There is a bit of a mystery surrounding the demise of the turkey who lived in El Jardín del Paraíso on East Fourth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D ... as previously noted, flyers about the turkey's death (from "neglect") were placed by someone in adjacent residential buildings ...

EVG reader Emily Iason took these photos on Oct. 30 ... the day after Superstorm Sandy... looking well...

Meanwhile, other feathered residents are OK there... per these photos by Bobby Williams last week...

Cleaning up El Jardín del Paraíso

EVG reader Ileana sent us these photos this morning... a crew is at El Jardín del Paraíso trimming and chipping the fallen trees here on East Fourth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D...

Meanwhile, people are wondering how the garden's turkey died after the storm... several readers spotted the turkey on Oct. 30...

Losses at El Jardín del Paraíso

Part of a downed willow tree remains blocking the sidewalk on East Fourth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D outside El Jardín del Paraíso...

In addition, a reader notes that someone placed this flyer in his building nearby.

No word on the condition of the other livestock/critters in the community garden.
