Signs of fall: the Feast of San Gennaro starts Thursday

The Feast of San Gennaro starts Thursday in Little Italy... and runs through Sunday, Sept. 25.

Workers have been setting up along Mulberry Street... as seen last night...
Two FYI dates! The 24th Annual Cannoli Eating Contest is Friday at 1 p.m. ... and save room for the 3rd Annual Zeppole Eating Competition on Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.

Last day for the Feast

The 93rd Annual Feast of San Gennaro ends today (after 11 days) on Mulberry Street. A good time to visit is about now — four hours before it officially opens for the day at 11:30 a.m.

You can visit the official Feast site for a list of today's activities.

Feast your eyes on this

That time of year already... the Feast of San Gennaro signage arrived back on Friday on Houston at Mulberry... the Feast takes place Sept. 12-22 this year.

New for the 2019 edition: a zeppole-eating contest. Per The Wall Street Journal (my go-to source for competitive-eating articles!):

The stuff-your-face affair, which is set for Sept. 18 at the midway point of the 11-day festival, is a natural fit for San Gennaro, said Danny Fratta, a longtime zeppole vendor who is organizing the event. In fact, the zeppole contest joins meatball and cannoli eating competitions already established at the festival.

The Feast of San Gennaro starts tonight: Do you care?

[EVG file photo]

Or maybe the question is, Will you go?

Anyway! I haven't been since 2009, and that was before anything was open for the day.

Also, Eater has a food preview here. The official Feast site is here.

The 84th Annual Feast of San Gennaro

To be honest, I forgot this had started Thursday... until I was looking at Bob Arihood's Nadie Se Conoce... He has this photo and others... I love this shot...

Here's the rundown. And why didn't Liev and Naomi let me know?

The best time to enjoy the Feast of San Gennaro

Before it opens for the day...and no one is there...

And among the handful of people there in the early hours...Liev Schreiber-Naomi Watts and family.
