Social Tees has moved into the former Gimme Gimme Records space

[Bobby Williams]

As you may have noticed, Social Tees has a new home now over on East Fifth Street next door to the 9th Precinct ... in the former home of Gimme Gimme Records. Slum Goddess noted this move last week. (Read her post here.)

Social Tees had moved into an East Second Street storefront in December 2011. And that Second Street space is on the rental market. Per the Massey Knakal listing, "most uses considered." Rent for the 950-foor-square space is available upon request.

Gimme Gimme closed last fall after being Cromanized. The store, which had celebrated its 18th year here, has reopened in Los Angeles. If you happen to be in the area...

Letter to a record store

Gimme Gimme Records closed for good on East Fifth Street Sunday. And on the last weekend, the following letter arrived.

The letter writer, a woman named Harriet, has several items of business to discuss. First, does this store buy cassettes? There is also a hard-luck tale about "2 males from Long Island" who came to her apartment in Brooklyn and took her record collection. In all caps, she explains that she was supposed to be paid for all this.

I "thought to God I'd trust them, and I made a terrible mistake."

Lastly she'd like some REO Speedwagon CDs, specifically one that had the following three songs "ON THE SAME CD":

• Keep on Loving You
• I Can't Fight This Feeling
• Take it on the Run

"The store got a lot of weird letters like that. I figured I would put one up in honor of the last day," said Gimme Gimme clerk Eden Brower. "We sort of made fun of it, but I feel badly if her stuff really was stolen. People make up stories like that all the time to get records cheap or free. It's hard to tell who is scamming."

Meanwhile, Gimme Gimme owner Dan Cook has plans to eventually reopen the store in Los Angeles.

Last weekend for Gimme Gimme Records

As we reported Tuesday, this gem of a record store on East Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue got hit with an enormous rent hike ... and is closing up after tomorrow...

Open 1-10 today ... and 1-7 tomorrow... stop by and say goodbye... and buy some vinyl.

Gimme Gimme Records is closing after Sunday; 4th East Village record store to shutter this year

Ugh. Gimme Gimme Records, a gem of a used shop on East Fifth Street (next to the 9th Precinct), is closing after this weekend. This past summer, as we noted here, Steve Croman of Croman Realty (9300 Realty) bought the building... a huge rent hike ensued and... the store that just recently celebrated its 18th year is closing Sunday night. That's how it goes.

And it is/was a great little store... open three days a week (and Slum Goddess works here) ... with a piano teacher using the space at other times. Seems so quaint in these bloodthirsty real-estate days.

Owner Dan Cook has plans to eventually reopen the store in Los Angeles. Maybe you can visit. And by my count, this is the fourth record store to close in the East Village this year — Norman's, Rockit Scientist and Big City Records.
