A sidewalk bridge for the future Joe and Pat's on 1st Avenue

The sidewalk bridge arrived last week outside the future East Village home of Staten Island-based pizzeria Joe and Pat's at 168 First Ave. between 10th Street and 11th Street... and workers removed the large sign of the previous occupant, Lanza's...

There's nothing on file yet at the DOB (except for a permit for the sidewalk bridge) to indicate what might be happening outside here. There is also a permit issued May 10 for kitchen renovations, including new plumbing and an updated HVAC system... (estimated cost per the DOB: $199,000).

No opening date just yet. The original Joe and Pat's opened on Victory Boulevard in Staten Island in 1960.

Joe and Pat’s mark their arrival on 1st Avenue

As you may know, Joe & Pat's, the 57-year-old pizzeria on Staten Island, is opening an outpost in the East Village.

The Joe and Pat's signage has just arrived at the former Lanza's space on First Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street... as these photos via Steven show...

Casey Pappalardo, one of the pizzeria's owners, told the Staten Island Advance in January that they'd be open within six months, but he didn't sound so convincing. "That's if all goes well — there's always some setbacks."

But the sign is a good sign anyway.

Grub Street recently named Joe and Pat's Staten Island's best pizza:

Joe & Pat’s is the king of Staten Island pizza. Its pies are the ultimate version of one of the borough’s dominant styles: thin-crust, vodka-sauced bar pie. Open since 1960, it doesn’t look like much, but the pizza is magnificent. The dough is pounded so it doesn’t get airy, resulting in a crust that’s disappearingly thin and extra crunchy. The vodka sauce is sweet and smooth; pepperoni, curled up in crisp cups, makes the perfect foil.

Lanza's closed for good back in July 2016 after the state seized the restaurant. But! Lanza's has come back to life as a to-go spot on 23rd Street.

Lanza's has returned — on 23rd Street

[Photo on 1st Avenue from last summer]

Last July 14, the state's fluorescent SEIZED sticker (for "nonpayment of taxes") arrived at Lanza's between 10th Street and 11th Street.

The old-world Italian restaurant, reportedly first opened in 1904, sat untouched until workers cleaned out the space in January.

Anyway, over the weekend, EVG regular OlympiasEpiriot noticed this storefront on 23rd Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue...

Apparently, in the past few months (no reviews yet at Yelp), the people who had been running Lanza's started offering some of those menu items to go or for delivery in space that also houses Marina Gourmet Deli.

As for the former Lanza's space on First Avenue, Joe & Pat's, the pizzeria that has been serving up slices on Victory Boulevard in Staten Island since 1960, is taking over.

Last look at the old Lanza's

As we noted yesterday afternoon, workers were clearing out the remains of the former Lanza's space on First Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street.

A few things were placed out on the sidewalk for free, such as some work pants...

EVG reader Lola Sáenz got a look inside the now (almost completely) empty Lanza's, which had been serving Italian cuisine here since 1904...

To date, there haven't been any permits filed with the DOB to renovate this space for incoming tenant Joe & Pat's, the pizzeria that has been serving up slices on Victory Boulevard in Staten Island since 1960.

Casey Pappalardo, one of the pizzeria's owners, told the Staten Island Advance that the family had been looking to open a location in Manhattan for a long time. "We were looking in the city for a while and then our neighbor actually approached us because he owns the building," he said.

And an opening date?

"We should open within six months," Casey prognosticates, adding with a chuckle, "That's if all goes well — there's always some setbacks."

Report: Staten Island pizzeria Joe & Pat’s taking over the Lanza's space on 1st Avenue

Joe & Pat's, the family owned pizzeria that has been serving up slices on Staten Island since 1960, is opening a second outpost — at the former Lanza's space on First Avenue.

Owner Casey Pappalardo told Eater, who first reported this news, that he and several uncles will be running the outpost and expect to open the 50-seat restaurant with a bar in the next six months.

Eater has more on the pizzeria's thin-crust pies in this 2015 video feature here.

The state seized Lanza's last July for nonpayment of taxes here between 10th Street and 11th Street.

The old-world Italian restaurant, which first opened in 1904, sat languishing until an auction of its contents on Jan. 5.

Lanza's is done as contents being auctioned off today

Lanza's closed back in July ... as the state's fluorescent SEIZED sticker (for "nonpayment of taxes") arrived at the restaurant on First Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street.

Since then, the old-world Italian restaurant, which first opened in 1904, sat languishing...

Unfortunately, the restaurant will not be reopening (a sign in the window said "closed until further notice"). The contents of Lanza's are being auctioned off the afternoon at 3. EVG correspondent Steven took a look inside...

Signs of life at Lanza's

On Wednesday, someone removed the state's orange SEIZED stickers (and picked up the mail) from the front of Lanza's on First Avenue... exactly one month to the date that the longtime Italian restaurant had closed for what the posted legalese said was for "nonpayment of taxes."

While it appears someone has been inside the restaurant here between 10th Street and 11th Street ... there's nothing about a reopening — just a sign noting they are "closed until further notice."

Lanza's remains closed on 1st Avenue

While the future of John's of 12th Street appears to remain secure, the news is less positive over at Lanza's on First Avenue. On July 14, as we first reported, the state's fluorescent SEIZED sticker (for "nonpayment of taxes") arrived at Lanza's here between 10th Street and 11th Street.

Nearly three weeks later, the SEIZED stickers remain on the front. The mail is also piling up. There's a FedEx awaiting pick up. It doesn't appear as if anyone has been inside in recent weeks...

The only new sign on the door of late was to alert attendees of the new location for Kasia's baby shower last weekend...

Lanza's is closed for now

The state's fluorescent SEIZED sticker (for "nonpayment of taxes") has arrived at Lanza's on First Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street, as this photo via EVG reader Muzz shows.

There is also a notice from the State's Department of Taxation and Finance. There isn't any other information about the situation at the moment…

Remember that these seizures aren't always permanent, as we saw at Sahara East, among other businesses.

Is the 108-year-old Lanza's Italian restaurant going Mexican?

EVG reader Tony Devers sent along these photos from outside the 108-year old Italian joint Lanza's (an EVG favorite) on First Avenue...

What's that? Help wanted for ... "Mexican cuisine" ...?

Are they changing concepts?

Not at all, said Hugo Alonso at Lanza's, which is part of the Sal Anthony family. They are actually opening a Mexican restaurant on 13th Street and Broadway.

OK, phew...

And more about the new restaurant on 13th Street and Broadway later...
