Like a 'Dream'

 

New Order is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of their first album, Movement. 

On this occasion today, the band released this video of "Dreams Never End" — Movement's lead track — from their concert (Nov. 18, 1981) at the Ukrainian National Home on Second Avenue between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street.

Dazed and confused

 

Getting ready to go out on the town with New Order from 1983... the video for "Confusion" was filmed in part at the Fun House on West 26th Street. 

(Thought of this in part because I saw that tix for New Order and the Pet Shop Boys went on sale today for the Garden in September 2022 — rescheduled from this past September.)

'Perfect' way

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme died this week. He was 73.

Aside from the film credits ("The Silence of the Lambs," Melvin and Howard," "Philadelphia," "Stop Making Sense") you likely know about, he also directed this New Order video for "The Perfect Kiss," set in the band's practice studio, from 1985.

This time of night

New Order played a sold-out show tonight at Radio City... which is good enough reason as always to trot out this footage of New Order's first NYC concert, which took place at the Ukrainian National Home on Second Avenue between East Ninth Street and St. Mark's Place on Nov. 19 1981.

Several readers told us that they were seeing New Order tonight (now over) or tomorrow at the Roseland Ballroom ... which is the perfect excuse once again to post all this ... New Order played the Ukrainian National Home on Second Avenue (between Ninth and St. Mark's) on Nov. 19 1981.

So New Order is embarking on their first North American tour since 2005 ... Oct. 18 at Roseland Ballroom. Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10.

"Standing around the Ukranian National Home on Manhattan's lower Second Avenue puts me in a sour mood. This is a prestigious gig in an odd venue, and the audience, like the hall, is truly pretentious in it's self-conscious unpretentiousness. The place is full of the cream of New York's pseudo-Continentals, the transparent and ridiculous '80's would-be bohemians with their long dark coats, scarves and faces. Unfortunately, very much the crowd you would expect for New Order. The evening's whole mood has been strongly anti-rock, so it's refreshing and pleasantly surprising when New Order's set begins brightly, with real strength and power."
