Visit a Marble cemetery in the East Village this weekend

Both historic Marble cemeteries in the East Village are hosting open days this weekend. (Despite the similarities in name, there isn't any formal connection between the two cemeteries.) 

• The New York City Marble Cemetery (above) on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue is available to visit tomorrow and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Read more about the history of the space here. As far as we can recall, this is the first time the property has been open to the public since 2019.

• The New York Marble Cemetery (below), 43 1/2 Second Avenue between Second Street and Third Street, is open tomorrow and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Find its history here. This space has been welcoming visitors on several weekends dating to April.

Head to a local cemetery this weekend (for a visit)!

You're in luck if you've ever wanted to visit one of the neighborhood's circa-1830 Marble Cemeteries: It's a Fall Open Weekend.

Over at the New York City Marble Cemetery on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue the gates will be open each day (Saturday and Sunday!) from noon to 5 p.m. They'll be historical displays available to learn more about the cemetery. You can also read this.

Meanwhile, the New York Marble Cemetery at 41 1/2 Second Ave. between Second Street and Third Street is open this weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

It's another Neighborhood Open Day today (Saturday, June 15!) at the New York City Marble Cemetery on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

From noon to 6 p.m. you'll have the opportunity to take in the usually gated space and learn more about its history.

Here are the remaining open days for the summer:

• Saturday August 17

Meanwhile, the New York Marble Cemetery at 41 1/2 Second Ave. between Second Street and Third Street will have open days on:

[Updated 1 p.m. — they closed for now with the rain. They will reopen if it lets up...]

You won't be able to visit the New York City Marble Cemetery today

In case your plans today included a visit to the New York City Marble Cemetery during its Neighborhood Open Day ... that isn't happening now... a handwritten note here on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue says the cemetery won't be open today "due to illness" ...

A message on the Cemetery's website is more ominous: "As of May 5, 2017, the Cemetery is temporarily closed to visitors until further notice."

The New York Marble Cemetery at 41 1/2 Second Ave. between Second Street and Third Street will be open next Sunday (Mother's Day!) from Noon to 4 p.m. Find their schedule for the season here.

Open Cemetery Weekend

This weekend, the New York City Marble Cemetery on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue... and the New York Marble Cemetery on Second Avenue between Second Street and Third Street are open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

About the Citi Bike docking station outside the New York City Marble Cemetery

We noted the arrival of a Citi Bike docking station the other day outside the New York City Marble Cemetery on Second Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...



For starters, it is only temporary, having moved from Second Avenue and Second Street outside Rosie's to make way for ongoing work by the city's Department of Design and Construction.

We wondered if maybe Cemetery officials requested this. (Handy for their Neighborhood Open days.) Or if not, how a Citi Bike docking station ends up in your front yard, so to speak.

Here's what Colleen Iverson, director of the New York City Marble Cemetery, had to say about it.

"No, we very much did not request this. We were contacted by a Citi Bike rep in April regarding a temporary placement and we requested to meet on site with them to discuss it. The meeting never took place as we were told the temporary location looked like it was no longer needed. We relaxed and thought we'd had a narrow escape. But, it seems it was only a postponement. We received zero notice of the installation."

A Citi Bike rep who contacted the Cemetery in April apologized for "an internal communication failure." Still, Iverson described the process as "being informed, not consulted."

"I did mention, to no avail, that part of the operation of a historic landmark site that doesn't have the resources to be open every day is to ensure a clear view from the sidewalk and that an eye catching row of bright blue detracts significantly from a visitor experiencing a view showing both the historic nature and the natural beauty of the grounds," Iverson said.

The docking station for 31 bikes is expected to be outside the historic cemetery founded in 1831 through the end of August.

Said Iverson: "We are not anti-bike but as far as the pros and cons and relative merits of different forms of transportation goes, the cemetery would have to say it sees itself as firmly pro-horse and buggy."

This is happening outside the historic cemetery founded in 1831, and located at 52-74 E. Second St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

Perhaps the Cemetery organizers requested a docking station ... make it easier for people to visit during its Neighborhood Open Days... but nothing like a docking station to ruin a view.

Cemetery officials did NOT request the docking station... They did not even receive any notice of the docking station's arrival. I'll do a separate post on this...
