Despite closure, Pulino's still lighting up the Bowery night sky; plus, auction Thursday!
Pulino's Bar and Pizzeria wrapped up its three-year run on the Bowery at East Houston after Sunday night. Keith McNally's pizzeria will become a French restaurant called Cherche Midi in the spring.
Last night, Big Red was still lighting up the early-evening commute...
Meanwhile, as Grub Street noted yesterday, McNally and Co. are auctioning off its leftover Pulino's parts on Thursday.
Here's some of what you will find at the auction…
We did not, however, spot this part of their former sidewalk cafe for sale… the Pulino's-sanctioned police barricade sidewalk cafe barriers!

Bye bye Big Red: Pulino's goes dark on Dec. 29
The Pulino's Countdown To Closure Clock has started… Eater reported yesterday that Keith McNally's pizzeria on East Houston and the Bowery will close on Dec. 29.
Next here for McNally and Co. as previously reported by Eater: A French restaurant called Cherche Midi will open in its place next spring.
Also, the EVG reader comments on the previous post about this closure were quite good.
Example!

Apparently the FAA will have to change their flight patterns now that the big red beacon on Houston Street is going dark. I just hope none of the airplanes trying to find NYC gets lost in the darkness....

Report: Pulino's closing to make for new French restaurant on the Bowery
[EVG file photo]
Pulino's Bar and Pizzeria, which apparently tripled nearby rents and caused men to urinate in the co-ed sink, will close in January to make way for a new Keith McNally concept, Eater is reporting.
The McNally-owned Pulino's will reopen in March as a French restaurant called Cherche Midi, which was also the name of a French military prison in Paris.
Eater quotes McNally:
Pulino's opened on the Bowery at East Houston Street in March 2010.

Through no one's fault but my own Pulino's hasn't fully worked and I've decided to change it quite radically.

Why a man urinated in Pulino's sink
In its "Neighborhood News" section this week, New York magazine makes note of the following...
Meanwhile, I've worked "urinated" and "poop" into headlines today. Banner day.

Pulino's enters Bowery sidewalk cafe garden party; DBGB put on notice
Three months after DBGB installed a garden oasis on the Bowery, corner mate Pulino's has retaliated with its own urban greenery...

Pulino's pulls it back off the Bowery
All this week I noticed that a handful of tables had made their way onto the sidewalk outside Pulino's on the Bowery...
Tuesday!
Wednesday!
...and Thursday! No more tables on the sidewalk...
What gives? No sidewalk permit?

Pulino's tables inch toward the Bowery
I swear these tables are about an inch closer to the street than they were the day before...
At this rate, the tables should be in the street by, say, August.

Life's a beach on the Bowery....

Noted
NY Barfly (via Grub Street) has a post on that Secret-Service-looking fellow pacing back in forth in front of Keith McNally's Pulino's on the Bowery and Houston:
Turns out the guard was there to secure the pies. The staff explained it was a “sketchy corner”, so he was milling about to keep the peace, and presumably to protect the pepperoni.

Why Pulino's chef Nate Appleman was arrested
According to Page Six today:
Nate Appleman, chef at Keith McNally's new Bowery hotspot Pulino's, got arrested Wednesday afternoon in the East Village. Appleman, who is covered in tattoos but stands barely 5-foot-8, was heading home from the pizza restaurant between shifts when cops spotted a chain running from his belt into a pocket. "It's a pocket knife that's two inches long that I used to cut boxes at work," Appleman told us. "I've collected knives since I was a kid. My mother gives me a knife every year on my birthday. This knife is the one she got me this year." After three police cars surrounded him, Appleman was taken to the 9th Precinct and charged with weapons possession. He was released two hours later and is due in court on April 27.

Noted (Pulino's Bar & Pizzeria edition)
While walking on the Bowery last night at Houston during prime dinner hours, I came across Pulino's Bar & Pizzeria ... and it was (!!!) empty...
Has the magic faded after just one week?
Oh. They're not open for dinner...yet! Until Friday, anyway...
And, according to Foursquare, who's the mayor...?
