Idlewild Coffee Co. coming to 5th Street
There's a new tenant for the empty retail space at 300 E. Fifth St. at Second Avenue ... a sign is now on the door for Idlewild Coffee Co. ...
Idlewild takes over from another coffee shop — Southern Cross Coffee, which closed this past September after two and half years in service.
No word on who the owners are at the moment. They do have a placeholder website up...
Thanks to Steven for the photos and tip!

Southern Cross Coffee has closed on 5th Street
[Photo by EVG reader Sheila Meyer]
You may have noticed the for-rent sign that recently arrived in the front window of Southern Cross Coffee at 300 E. Fifth St. near Second Avenue.
Obviously not a good sign... and after service on Monday, the Australian-Argentinian coffee shop closed ... the owners left a note of thanks for patrons...
No word on why Southern Cross Coffee, named in honor of the Southern Cross constellation, decided to close.
As noted before, this is a coffee-rich zone with numerous nearby choices, including (but not limited to!) the Coffee Project on Fifth Street just off the Avenue... the new 787 Coffee on Second Avenue at Sixth Street, Cafe Mocha on Second Avenue and Seventh Street, the Bean on Second Avenue and Third Street, Kona Coffee and Company on Second Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street, and Porto Rico Importing Co. on St. Mark's just east of Second Avenue ... and Spiritea opened in May a few storefronts away on the corner.
Southern Cross debuted in February 2017 in these newly renovated storefronts. Jamie the check-cashing guy previously worked from this space before the renovations.

Southern Cross Coffee now open on 5th Street
Southern Cross Coffee opened its doors on Sunday at 300 E. Fifth St. (the Shops of East Fifth Street) between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
Here are details via the Southern Cross Coffee Facebook page:
The name Southern Cross Coffee is in honor of the Southern Cross constellation, which is visible primarily in the southern hemisphere and sometimes as far up as 20 degrees north latitude. Our founders were both born in the southern hemisphere, where the constellation is very much a part of our cultures.
And...
Grab a great cup of locally roasted coffee and quick bite at Southern Cross Coffee. Natural foods and espresso made the traditional Italian way.
The cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. They do have a website, though it's still mostly under construction.
Jamie the check-cashing guy previously worked from this storefront before the renovations. The other two spaces remain on the rental market.

About Southern Cross Coffee, opening on East 5th Street
Back in July, a tipster told us that a coffee shop was taking the middle of the three new storefronts at the Shops of East Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.
This sign arrived earlier this month for Southern Cross Coffee...
We were waiting to learn a little more about the operation. Here are details via the Southern Cross Coffee Facebook page:
