Pastor Will let us know that the annual Blessing of the Animals takes place tomorrow (Sunday!) at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish on Avenue B at Ninth Street.
Per the EVG inbox:
Inspired by Saint Francis and his love for all God's creatures, on Sunday, Oct. 8, we invite all pets and their parents to join us for our beloved annual Blessing of the Animals!"
There are two opportunities for pets to receive a blessing:
• At 11 a.m. our regular worship service indoors will become alive with activity as pets join in the prayer and praise! Please be sure all pets joining our service are well-behaved and potty trained.
• At 1 p.m. a brief blessing will be given outdoors in our garden, perfect for any pets and parents who prefer a blessing on the go!
On this Ash Wednesday, Pastor Will offered "ashes to go" from the corner of Ninth Street and Avenue B outside Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish ... pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike stopped by while EVG contributor Stacie Joy was there...
Join poet, author and activist Robert Galinsky and Trinity Lower East Side for Open Mic Under the Stars! Wednesday, May 11 8-9:30 p.m. in Trinity's garden at the corner of Ninth Street and Avenue B.
Whether you’re a singer, a poet, an author, a comic, a magician … whatever! We want to hear you at our mic! Sign up in advance for a 5-minute slot at Eventbrite or just show up at the door. Freewill donations are gladly accepted, all supporting Trinity's work in the community.
The organizers of the Loisaida CommUnity Fridge and Pantry are looking for volunteers to help with the effort here at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish on Avenue B at Ninth Street.
The Loisaida CommUnity Fridge is in need of volunteers for weekly fridge maintenance and cleaning shifts, food donation pick ups, and outreach. We would love your help!
And THANK YOU to all those who have volunteered at the Loisaida CommUnity Fridge already! We can’t succeed without you.
You can find details about volunteering at this link.
It will be guided by the philosophy of "take what you need, leave what you can," with the goal of providing relief to community members experiencing food insecurity, reducing food waste from local restaurants/groceries, and supplementing the non-24/7 food pantries in the area.
Organizers are also looking for local residents to help maintain the fridge and provide other types of administrative support. Find the volunteer form right here.
They are also accepting donations of fresh, healthy food, including canned goods. (Please label fresh food with date and ingredients.) Here is the form (link) for businesses/organizations to fill out if they'd like to donate any goods — either on a recurring basis or a one-time gift.
The Loisaida CommUnity Fridge and Pantry will debut tomorrow morning at 11 at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish on Avenue B at Ninth Street.
As previously reported, the nonprofit L.E.S. CommUnity Concerns is behind the launch of this 24/7 fridge and pantry. Per the organizers:

The nonprofit L.E.S. CommUnity Concerns is helping launch a new community fridge at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish on Avenue B at Ninth Street.
We are a group of volunteers in the East Village getting ready to launch a Loisaida CommUnity Fridge and Pantry, a 24/7 Free Fridge and Pantry located outside of Trinity Lower East Side (SE corner of Avenue B and 9th Street).
The model is very similar to the East Village Neighbors' Fridge and Pantry located outside of S'Mac (12th Street and 1st Ave). It will be guided by the philosophy of "take what you need, leave what you can," with the goal of providing relief to community members experiencing food insecurity, reducing food waste from local restaurants/groceries, and supplementing the non-24/7 food pantries in the area.
We are aiming to begin offering the service to the community in the next couple of weeks, and need your help in making sure the fridge is a success. (There is no specific time commitment necessary to join the group.)
Yesterday afternoon, Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish hosted a walk-through Blessing of the Animals in their garden space on Avenue B at Ninth Street... EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped to catch Pastor Will in action in this celebration of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals...
... and here's Pastor Will with his husband Steven and their delightfully drooly dog, Joey...
In commemoration of St. Francis' love for all creatures and in celebration of the gifts of love and devotion our pets bring to our lives, Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish will host a walk-through Blessing of the Animals in their garden on the corner of Avenue B and 9th Street this Sunday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 2 in the afternoon.
Especially if you are out enjoying the exciting events around the neighborhood at this year's LUNGS Harvest Festival on Sunday, stop by Trinity's garden with your furry friends for a blessing! Trinity's church pup and Tompkins Square Dog Run favorite Joey will be there and he'd love to welcome you!
In addition to their normal pantry service, Trinity's Services and Food for the Homeless (SAFH) on Ninth Street at Avenue B is providing an additional free food distribution this afternoon.
From 3 to 5 p.m., SAFH will have groceries for 300 families. No registration required.
Trinity's SAFH — at the Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish — has been serving meals to those in need for more than 30 years.
On Sunday, May 27, we will gather with our congregation, elected officials, and community leaders for worship with Bishop Don McCoid of the Metropolitan New York Synod presiding and former Pastor and founder of Trinity's Services And Food for the Homeless, Pr. Bob Wollenburg preaching.
Broadway musicians and the TLES choir will provide special music. After worship, we will meet for a toast, presentations by community leaders, a catered reception, and live music in our garden on the corner of 9th Street and Avenue B.
Meanwhile, church reps recently unearthed this short documentary from 1992 that was created as a fundraising appeal for the building that the church currently resides in on Ninth and B...
As a Trinity rep tells us: "We'll have clothes, kitchen and other household items, books, and some furniture."
And what does the money go to?
"Everything we raise this year will be split between our soup kitchen/food pantry program (Trinity's Services And Food for the Homeless) and Lutheran World Relief, specifically to help with relocation and assistance for Syrian Refugees. Last year we were able to raise over $1,000 through sales and donations."
And as the flyer notes, dogs are welcome … in case anyone is coming or going from the annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade today.
The outdoor summer film series continues tonight at Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish on East Ninth Street at Avenue B. (And sorry for the short notice!)
For free out in the church garden tonight: "Mrs. Doubtfire."
The doors open 7:30. Film starts around 8 or whenever it is suitably dusk-y out.
For free out in the church garden tonight: "Clueless."
A Trinity rep tells us: "We basically throw a sheet up on the building and then kick back and watch a movie. People bring snacks, drinks (alcoholic drinks are fine. We're Lutheran, so we appreciate a good cocktail.). Just something fun to do."
The doors open 7:30. Film starts around 8 or whenever it is suitably dusk-y out. (If it rains, then Trinity moves the film inside.)
