There's no such thing as a free lunch....
OK, so I looked. Based on this ad on East Seventh Street at First Avenue, went to NBC's new New York Locals Only Web site.
Anyway, while there, you can vote on the city's "best 'old' bar," McSorley's or Old Town.

What's left of Lou
A few of the Lou Reed/Supreme ads are left hanging around...Such as this one on East Seventh Street near First Avenue...
...and this one on East Third Street near Avenue C.

Jaws
A few weeks back our pal BoweryBoogie mentioned the Western Union ads on the vacant groundfloor storefront along the Ludlow...
Anyway, this damn thing continues to terrify me...

A doll's eye view of Third Avenue
I now feel as it is my civic -- and moral -- duty to keep you up-to-date on the wall space on Third Avenue near 12th Street. After a few weeks of a blank wall, we have a new (creepy as fuck) ad.

The ol' model starving stickers are back
Or maybe the stickers never went away? On 14th Street near Fourth Avenue. And what exactly is she doing in those rose bushes?

What do Kermit the Frog and Lou Reed now have in common?
Meanwhile, Supreme unveiled its latest model last week....Here's Lou on some plywood on East Seventh Street near First Avenue.....

Measuring Tempo
So there are new ads on the bus shelter at Third Avenue between 13th Street and 14th Street for this HIGH-TECH wonder of a living space, Tempo. Interestingly enough, these ads are almost right outside the kind-of-stodgy-now-by-comparison One Ten 3rd high rise by the Toll Brothers...
Here's what the residence would look like if you had a photo of it on your knock-off iPod...
Anyway, a little later I was on 23rd Street and Second Avenue...For some reason I thought Tempo was a little further along...
P.S. An image from the Tempo Web site....

Off the wall
I'm always rather surprised to see the side of the building free of ads here along this stretch of Third Avenue near 12th Street...Been empty for at least a week since "The Pink Panther Part Duh" banner came down...
This is always prime ad space too. A short history of the wall from 2008...

In search of cheesy (ballsy?) Super Bowl promos
I understand that NBC has a big Bruce Springsteen informercial planned for this evening. To coincide with the release of his new record, the Super Bowl will also be played before and after a Springsteen mini-concert.
Meanwhile, for no good reason, I was amusing myself by trying to find the cheesiest Super Bowl party special...So far, the leading contender is...
And has anyone ever been to Whistlin' Dixie's Texas Tavern? (WARNING: If you click on their link, expect to hear some Kenny Rogers...) It's at West 51th Street and 11th Avenue. See you there!

A few signs from the recession
Three shots that I took Sunday...
DeRobertis Caffe on First Avenue in the East Village...
Uh, some men's shop on...uh, Sixth Avenue near 23rd Street. I think.
Supermac on Seventh Avenue.
Not sure what happened with this photo...this would be the laser hair removal recession special...shot on Clinton Street between Houston and Stanton.
Also from last fall...a sign that Eater has noted on 14th Street near Third Avenue...the sign is still there...
Meant to mention this earlier...$5 for mac and cheese? And that's a recession special? How much does a box of mac and cheese cost at Key?

Sex and the recession
So, apparently, New York City is still being marketed in the Sex and the City manner in which this ad suggests:
Hot pink! A martini glass! Good times! All is well! Spend money!
Anyway, I'm glad a little reality worked its way into the top left-hand corner of the Cemusa ad on Second Avenue near St. Mark's....

Adbusters: 11th and Third gets a new ad to keep it warm
Just last week I wondered what happened to all the ads in the neighborhood. Have no fear, ad lovers! Just a little bit ago I watched the big ad go up at Third Avenue and 11th Street for He's Just Not That Into You...
Happened by in time to see Scarlett Johansson's chest get smoothed out.

Where are all the ads?
Have you noticed how many blank walls there are around the neighborhood these days...? Buildings that typically always have some sort of banner ads attached?
Easy enough, I suppose, to chalk this up to the recession and downturn in advertising, etc. Could also be the time of year. How many more quality films like My Bloody Valentine 3D can there be to promote? Or maybe there's something else...perhaps the East Village is no longer a hot demographic area that advertisers want to target.
In any event, no complaints here about the lack of ads.
