Waiting on a friend

I noticed a little artwork on the wall of the former Tribe along St. Mark's Place at First Avenue....

Sunday:

Didn't last too long.

Tuesday:

Perhaps the landlord felt as if the art "was not going to enhance the aesthetic of the building."

And as far as I know, the tapas place is still expected in this location.

No anarchy?

For months now, the anarchy graffiti was on the wall of the real estate office on 11th Street and Second Avenue.

And now...

Interpret this any way that you wish.

Kid A

I enjoyed watching the additions to this ad on the side of East Village Farms on Avenue A near Seventh Street....

Sadly! The kid was papered over with an ad for flavored vodka.

Ramenification of Love Saves the Day continues

Yesterday morning, we noted the new plywood surrounding the former Love Saves the Day store on Second Avenue at Seventh Street... Now one of the last remaining bits of the former shop was removed -- the tiled Love Saves the Day sign above the storefront...

Here's how it looks now...

Also, as the Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve (GFOEVG) noted, the plywood covered two tags by longtime NYC graffiti artists, SEN4 and KAY2... their fate will soon be sealed under several coats of paint along with the rest of the colorful LSD façade...

Cleaning up the White Negro

A lot more White Negro tags have been spotted in recent weeks...

...of course, not everyone appreciates it.

But the tags seem like a challenge to remove.

A new door at Zips

And now a mysterious new door has been added to the side of the former Zips Deli space at Avenue B and Fifth Street. Possibly a door to enter and exit the kitchen for an upscale diner-type place...?

The woman who "captured graffiti’s golden and assaultive years"

The Times has a feature on Martha Cooper, the photographer who captured the prolific NYC graffiti artists of the 1970s-1980s. As the paper notes, her 1984 book “Subway Art,” created with Henry Chalfant, a photographer and filmmaker, "captured graffiti’s golden and assaultive years."

The above photo from 1980 by Cooper at the East 180th Street subway platform in the Bronx.

The makeover at Zips continues: Now the graffiti is gone

As I noted last Friday, the former Zips Deli on Avenue B at Fifth Street is getting a makeover

The hot rumor — which means it's wrong — is an upscale diner-type place. (As long as it's not another cafe-bakery-small-plates-type place. Or a bar. Or yogurt. Or...)

Anyway, while on the way home from work, I noticed the paint job...and removal of the graffiti...

This will not make the Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve very happy.

Meanwhile, the work permit made an appearance the past week.

Houston and Avenue B in 1997....and 2007

Two weeks back, we mentioned the new mural by Chico and Tats Cru on Houston and Avenue B.

Here's a quick look at some recent history of the corner...

May 2007:

September 1997:

Someone wasn't a big fan of the Royal Family....hence the "die" mustache for the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
