Reminders: MulchFest (aka Chip-a-thon) is this weekend in Tompkins Square Park

The trees are piled highish in the middle of Tompkins Square Park ahead of this weekend's MulchFest (now a 2-day extravaganza, though surprisingly without any corporate sponsors — The Official Amber Lager of the 2019 MulchFest, say).

Anyway!

The Chip-a-thon (aka Chipping Weekend) happens in the Park tomorrow and Sunday. Per the Parks Department website: "We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree."

The chipping hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We'll have all eight hours available later as a prime-time PPV event and for purchase as a DVD with bonus content. Look for coverage this weekend as well as red-carpet interviews from the mysterious sinkhole by the holiday tree.

Meanwhile, the drop-off site on Ninth Street and Avenue A isn't catching on as expected...

There aren't any more holiday trees to mulch in Tompkins Square Park

The tree pen is empty for now... just 45 days past Dec. 25. Hopefully we have enough mulch in reserve to get us through the summer.

Mulching commences in Tompkins Square Park while a picturesque snow falls

The 2017 MulchFest/TreeCycle is officially underway in Tompkins Square Park... Despite a botched opening — workers pulled a Kanye and started the proceedings 15 minutes later than advertised — the Park was soon filled with the gentle purr of a mulcher mulching... as these photos by EVG Senior Mulching Correspondent Steven show...

So far, the crowds are fairly light to watch the proceedings... (guests are able to take home a bag of mulch — great in smoothies and acai bowls)

And there haven't been any takers (yet) for the MulchFest Premium Seats, a VIP package that includes Prime Seat Locations, VIP Express Entry and a MulchFest Poster autographed by the Deputy Commissioners of the NYC Parks Department.

MulchFest allegedly happens until 2 (p.m.) today ... and commences again tomorrow from 10-2.

Reminders: You can watch your holiday tree get mulched right before your eyes this weekend

Juuuuuuuuuust a reminder (how could anyone forget???) that the annual MulchFest/Tree-Cycle is this weekend in Tompkins Square Park ... Saturday (tomorrow!) and Sunday (the day after tomorrow!), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Per the Parks Depo:

Join the NYC Parks, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree. More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

Tompkins Square Park is an official chipping site. Back to the Parks Depo: "Watch your tree get chipped in front of you, and get a free bag of mulch to take home for your plantings!"

Will we actually get to take the remains of our tree home with us? Or will they just give us a random bag of mulch?

If you don't want to watch your tree get mulched, just leave it outside the Park...

Also! The Department of Sanitation "will collect and compost clean Christmas trees left at the curb" through Jan. 14. (The trees left curbside are also allegedly chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into compost for NYC's parks, institutions and community gardens.) Don't forget to remove all lights, ornaments, stands, beer cans and plastic bags from the trees left at the curb.

We used up the last of our mulch puns last year

Sure, you have about 18 to 24 weeks of life left in your Christmas/holiday tree, but if you just have to dump the damn thing so early, then head over to Tompkins Square Park … where there is a tree depository in the middle of the Park ahead of MulchFest.

MulchFest 2015 takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 10-11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And we'll be selling VIP wristbands for $500 that get you:
• Commemorative VIP party laminate
• MulchFest gift bag with exclusive merchandise
• Specially designed MulchFest tour apparel item
• Early entry into the venue before general doors
• Crowd free merchandise shopping
• Designated VIP check-in

MulchFest is underway!

Until 2 p.m. today… and back at it tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Tompkins Square Park. And if you don't have a tree, well, drag over that damn loveseat you never liked.

Earlier, we spotted the crew on Second Avenue… parked in front of Little Poland… perhaps a pre-mulch breakfast?

Hope that they got some stuffed cabbage!

Reminders: MulchFest is this weekend!

Exciting times this weekend — it's the annual MulchFest tomorrow and Sunday ... our eighth or ninth favorite days of the year in Tompkins Square Park!

As a special treat this year, chef Wylie Dufresne will be on-hand to show you how to make instant pea parmesan noodles in saffron consomme with morel dust entirely from mulch.

Treecycle hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. So, as the parks website says, bring your holiday tree "to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city." If not you, then maybe give your neighbor's annoying teen a few bucks to drag it there for you.

Sunday, December 22, 2013

Can we at least enjoy the damn trees first before thinking about mulching them?

Finally just bought the damn tree and now you have to think about mulching it.

Signs are up around Tompkins Square Park for the annual MulchFest … happening Jan. 11-12.

Maybe just drag the fucker over to the Park Christmas morning. Why wait!

-----

Also!

The lonley-looking tree left by itself outside St. Mark's Market has apparently been sold!

Yesterday!

Today!

Finally, in other holiday miracles… the Second Avenue Snowman has found a second wind…

Bring your dead Christmas trees to Tompkins Square Park, or we're mulching the police car

It is Day 2 of the MulchFest in Tompkins Square Park ... until 2 p.m. today ... And we didn't see many many trees piled up left to mulch. So. There may not be much mulching.

Meanwhile, the gardeners have spread the mulch on parts of the Park...

..while others have spread their unwanted pizza...

The ides of mulch

And here's the scene after Day 1 of the MulchFest in Tompkins Square Park...

Will there be enough to mulch tomorrow, or will we have to dig into our tax records....?

Chips ahoy in Tompkins Square Park this weekend

Sure, you could toss your tree in front of your building with the ornaments and stuff still on it...

[EVG reader Corina]

... or you could take it out to get drunk, then abandon it in a grocery cart on East 13th Street...

[Via THE NOTORIOUS L.I.B.E.R.A.T.I.O.N.]

... or you can drag it over to Tompkins Square Park for the annual MulchFest, holiday days of obligation in the EVG household...

The trees continue to pile up in the middle of the Park...

[Bobby Williams]

We've also spotted someone trying to mulch fake cottony snow ... or, perhaps, hide the beard evidence from SantaCon...

Yes, that fake cottony snow...

The MulchFest is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday, and we'll have 38 more posts on it before the weekend is over...

Residents already 'chipping in' (heh) with recycling their Christmas trees

Someone started the first pile of discarded Christmas trees yesterday in Tompkins Square Park ...

[Bobby Williams]

And we are still weeks away from the city's official MulchFest:

Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12 and 13, 2013
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Per the City's Parks & Rec site:

These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree. More than 24,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

Mulch Madness, of course

Workers dropped off a fresh batch of mulch today in Tompkins Square Park... will this tempt any pub crawlers to play King of the Mountain this weekend? (Please don't answer that...)

Reminders today: Day 2 of MulchFest in Tompkins Square Park

So, at least while we were around, it was a fairly low-key — but productive! — day of mulching yesterday... we didn't spot any politicos in protective eyewear... there wasn't a radio station sponsor like last year (the now-defunct WRXP, who seriously played "Laid" by James at the start of the festivities). Read our report from last year here.

Anyway, so — wait...sir? Sir! Watch out for the mulcher while walking and texting...

As we were saying, all the action was on Avenue A yesterday. Apparently transformers are cooler than mulchers.

Parents accidentally throw out children with Christmas tree

Oh, hold your booing until the end of the post!

Just a reminder about the MulchFest tomorrow and Sunday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in Tompkins Square Park.

I'll be live blogging the whole time from the MulchFest... follow along at Twitter #WoodChippersAreActuallyReallyLoud.

The Ides of Mulch

We have a little more time left before the start of the City's annual MulchFest. But! It's not too soon to start dragging your Christmas trees over to Tompkins Square Park... here was the scene yesterday...

Live blogging the 2011 MulchFest!

We'll be coming to you LIVE! all weekend from the MulchFest at Tompkins Square Park...

We're here with 101.9, the official radio sponsor of MulchFest 2011...

There is also a tent featuring Cabot cheese ... and two people in Dunkin Donut tracksuits... (really)

Anyway!

11:15: Someone turns on the music ... (live feed from 101.9?) ... the song marks the official start of the Mulching! And the song?

"Laid" by James. (really)

11:16: Some local officials and other assorted people (mostly all in ear plugs) stand for a photo opp ...

11:16.31: The mulching begins!

I've used up all my mulch puns

Anyway, the MulchFest is this weekend in Tompkins Square Park ... I'll be there with a sound meter... if the mulcher gets too loud and starts disturbing nearby residents, then I will file formal complaints ... and ask that the number of MulchFests be reduced in the future....

But seriously, the pile of waiting-to-be-mulched trees has made for a fine playground for some kids...

Thanks to Bobby Williams for all three of these photos....

Trees remain under watchful eye on eve of MulchFest

Hey, it's the city's annual MulchFest this weekend. If you have an old, now-dead tree in your living quarters, then you can bring it to Tompkins Square Park, now or this weekend.

And do not worry about leaving your tree behind for tree thieves: The piles are being closely guarded!

Although last night it looked as if someone came through and the trees all around the place...
