Polishing up 8 Avenue B for a new nail salon

The build-out continues inside the storefront at 8-10 Avenue B between Second Street and Houston...
EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by the space to learn that a nail salon is in the works here...
The pedicure area looks promising for your tootsies...
The space was previously Top Notch Locksmith & Security, which added a CBD section along the way before closing last fall.

Upscale nail salon casualty on 13th Street

Côte, "a luxurious nail care destination," has closed its outpost on 13th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue, per EVG reader Laura K.

No word from ownership about the closure... no note for patrons. The place was just suddenly gone.

This was the first NYC location for the L.A.-based business, opening here in August 2017.

Unique former 10th Street residence is now a nail salon

In 1971, Tom Mulligan moved into a former storefront on 10th Street between Avenue A and First Avenue that had been outfitted as a live-in woodworking shop.

Mulligan died in July 2016 at age 79.

The ground-floor unit, a cozy-looking space that was filled with books and plants, had remained empty since his death.

At the end of 2017, EVG regular Daniel noted that the space looked to be in use as a nail salon...

There isn't any sign up yet... but they are open for business...

EVG regular Scuba Diva called this one in the comments upon hearing about Mulligan's death: "I have to wonder if Tom's apartment will become a bar, a nail salon, or a dry cleaners now, though."

Updated: Breeze Nail Spa closes for renovations on 2nd Avenue

An EVG reader wrote in to say that Breeze Nail Spa on Second Avenue abruptly closed at the start of the New Year without any notice to its patrons.

Per the reader: "They are a huge neighborhood spot with a good following and I walked by tonight and the place was cleaned out entirely!"

As these photos via Steven from yesterday show, workers were clearing out out the storefront here between Third Street and Fourth Street...

Updated 11:30 a.m.

Per a commenter, the outgoing message phone at Breeze notes a temporary closure for renovations.

They are back open...

The nail salon One Plus One has closed on 1st Avenue

Tht's it for One Plus One on First Avenue between First Street and Second Street. A note on the door thanks customers for their patronage (and offers an apology for any inconvenience the closure may have caused) ...

The same folks apparently own Joyful Nail at 35 Avenue A.

The closing of One Plus One may also effectively end any confusion that people may have with the bar One and One a storefront away...

Nail salons on 14th Street: 1 up, 1 down

The nail salon (not store) has opened at 248 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. Part of the awning remains up for the previous tenant, C & B Convenience Store (as well as the ad for Vita Coco Coconut Water).

Meanwhile! Closer to Third Avenue, Gigi Nail Spa has closed...

The space is for rent. The listing at Winick doesn't mention the asking rent.

Something featuring nails coming to 248 E. 14th St.

Renovations continue at the former C & B Convenience Store at 248 E. 14th St., which shut down in June.

Work permits show that a "nail store" is on the way here between between Second Avenue and Third Avenue...

Hopefully the store will carry a decent variety of by-the-pound nails, including spiral shank, roofing and masonry.

OK, more than likely this space will be a nail salon.

Meanwhile next door, as previously reported, a quick-serve restaurant called Poke Kitchen is in the works.

[Updated] Nail salon coming to the former Twist space on Avenue A

The signage is up at 70 Avenue A for Appolodine, a nail salon in the works for the empty storefront between Fourth Street and Fifth Street.

The website listed on the signage isn't active just yet, so there's no word on the various services that Appolodine will offer. A reader found the website.

The space was previously home to Twist, a froyo-gelato shop with irregular hours.

H/T to EVG reader JG for the photos and intel!

Smoke shop, the new nail salon, opening in former nail salon on Avenue A

Well, OK — if you made it past that headline... a tipster tells us that a smoke shop (water-pipe and vaping accessories, etc.) is opening over at 221 Avenue A between East 13th Street and East 14th Street where the nail salon was. No one was around the premises to confirm. But this is what our tipster hears.

Signage spotting: Sea Beauty Spa on Avenue B

[EVG photo from 2013]

As we noted last month, a nail salon was taking over the Amor Bakery space at 224 Avenue B near East 14th Street.

And now the signage has arrived for Sea Beauty Spa ...

There's a web address for the salon on the awning, but the site is still under construction. So for now we don't know the various services they will offer, and if they will serve acai bowls.

A small fire broke out at Amor on April 22, 2013, and the family-run bakery was never able to reopen.

Nail salon in the works for former Amor Baker space on Avenue B

A small fire broke out at the Amor Bakery at 224 Avenue B on April 22, 2013. Unfortunately, the family-run business was never able to reopen here near East 14th Street.

Now from reliable sources comes word that workers are fitting the space for a nail salon…

And that's all we know about that.

As for Amor, we always enjoyed looking at the specialty cakes in the window display… (always wondered why the guy posing in the Speedo had a greenish tint to his body … except for his head)

Going Hollywood on East First Street

What, you expecting Daniel Craig?

Hollywood Nail and Spa has taken over the space of the former Cozy Lounge, the hookah bar that the Marshal seized last summer here on East First Street near Avenue A.

And they are offering a Grand Opening mani-pedi special for $20.

For whom the Spa Belles toll

EVG reader Corey noted the following about the Spa Belles location on Second Avenue at East Seventh Street:

I was walking by there last night a bit after 10, and saw a moving truck. A group of maybe 5 were loading up equipment, chairs and stuff into the nearly full truck. The nail salon looked nearly empty ...

And the place is empty today... and someone removed the "Belles" from the sign. The other NYC locations remain open.

The Ludlow getting the inevitable non-fast-food tenant

Well, this isn't really newsy ... BoweryBoogie pointed this out back in December... just kinda wanted it for the record... Anyway, four years after opening, The Ludlow has another retail tenant here on East Houston at Ludlow...

Nail salon! And that name! Petition!

18th nail salon opening on Avenue A

OK, I'm kidding about that headline... this would be the fifth...

Anyway! RyanAvenueA points us to this sign for the coming-soon Joyful Nails arriving at the long-empty First House storefronts between Third Street and Second Street...

So, what do you think? Good news that it's a business that will be open during the day... and not related to nightlife? (Unless you go for a mani before that Bridesmaid or Bachelor Pub Craw...) Or do you think they're already enough nail salons around here...? Like the two on First Avenue between First Street and Third Street?

Yes, we walked the streets last night counting nail salons.

The East Village is officially well-represented in the nail/skin salon category

Nothing against nail/skin salons. But. I'd argue that there are enough of them now in the East Village to keep our nails and pores nice and pretty for some time...

A new skin salon is opening is opening on Second Avenue near Fourth Street (a few doors away from a recently renovated salon...)

Meanwhile, new salons recently opened on Fifth Street between Second Avenue and Cooper Square ...

and Seventh Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue ...

Today in nail salon openings

New on Avenue A between Ninth Street and 10th Street... Previously this location was home to Top A Nails, who moved one block to the south to the old old Blue space.

I have nothing against nail salons, but doesn't it seem like there are already plenty around here...?

Meanwhile, another salon opened two weeks ago on 10th Street near First Avenue in the former JC Penney catalog store... the chatty owner said she moved her shop from 13th Street between University and Fifth Avenue after the landlord jacked up her rent to $11,000 a month...

Nails to be done at old Blue space

The former fancy dress shoppe Blue on Avenue A next to Lucy's is a prime chunk of EV real estate...and it ...

...will be the new home to Top A Nails, the salon that's now on A between Ninth Street and 10th Street.
