A look at Wicked Heathens, now open on 9th Street

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Wicked Heathens, a jewelry store carrying clothing, accessories and candles, recently opened at 337 E. Ninth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

I stopped by the shop and met with owner-designer Martha Henry and manager-designer Daymone Edmonds, who has a clothing brand — Culture and Fate — also carried at Wicked Heathens.
Henry discussed what drew her to the East Village from Brooklyn to set up her first brick-and-mortar outpost.

"Back when I used to do artist markets, there was such an amazing community of creators. During the pandemic, I was forced to focus on online sales and started working from home, but I felt like I lost that community," she said. "Years later, I decided it was time to open a brick-and-mortar [shop] filled with like-minded creators and makers. The East Village has such an amazing community of small businesses that really support each other, which is what drew me to open up in this area."
Hours: Monday-Saturday, noon-7 p.m.; Sunday, noon-6 p.m.

The Green Room setting up a CBD shop on 9th Street

The Green Room, billed as New Jersey's largest CBD retail chain, is opening an outpost on Ninth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

One source on the block said the shop, featuring an assortment of CBD products ranging from meal replacement powders to pet treats, might be open as early as tomorrow.

This marks the brand's second NYC branch, joining the one on Cornelia Street.

The space at 314 E. Ninth St. was previously the first retail store for Eileen Fisher, opening in 1987 before officially shutting down back in February.

Coming soon: City Clouds, Kumon, GlossLab

A few new coming-soon businesses to note...

• City Clouds, 120 E. Seventh St. between Avenue A and First Avenue

A convenience store/smoke shop is in the works for this long-vacant space. Turntable Lab, who moved away from here in November 2016, was the last tenant.
• Kumon, 99 Avenue B between Sixth Street and Seventh Street

This will be the latest NYC location for the educational center that offers afterschool math and reading programs. East Side Ink moved from this space one storefront to the south in early 2017.
• GlossLab, 68 Bleecker St. between Broadway and Crosby

The fast-growing membership-based nail studio is opening in the former Café Angelique space.

Mug & Cup bringing coffee and juice to Avenue C

Signage arrived this week for Mug & Cup, a coffee and juice shop coming soon to 115 Avenue C between Seventh Street and Eighth Street.

This will be the second outpost for Mug & Cup, which got its start in East Flatbush.

No. 115 has been vacant for the past few years as the building was sold and gut-renovated. The retail space has been empty since Le Jardin Bistro closed in June 2015. Previous ventures here include Apartment 13 and The Porch.

Thanks to Dave on 7th for the photo!
