Friday's parting shot
A PSA on Third Street between Avenue A and First Avenue... per EVG reader Kait, who shared the photo: "Two manholes on this block were steaming from under parked cars. Appreciate FDNY signing it so we know it’s legit."

Area under heat advisory today and tomorrow
NYC is under a heat advisory starting today at noon, lasting through tomorrow at 8 p.m. Cooling centers are open across the city. To find the nearest location call 311 or visit the City’s Cooling Center Finder. This city map provides details on public spray showers as well as tree shade.
Meanwhile, @Newyorkist shared this photo from this morning on Second Avenue and 14th Street. And yes — a few people have pointed out that the man is being inconsiderate for not wearing a mask.

We're having a heat wave
[Cooling center at St. Stanislaus on 7th Street]
As you're likely well aware by now, the city is in for a heat wave — featuring oppressive heat and humidity and unbearable "Baked Apple" puns — through the weekend.
As always in situations like this, I cut-n-paste from The Wall Street Journal:
The National Weather Service said it predicts temperatures of up to 101 degrees in some parts of the city on Saturday. It is the first time since 2012 that temperatures in the city have been more than 100 degrees, according to the weather service.
In New York City, a heat wave is declared when the heat index is 95 degrees or higher for two or more consecutive days.
The heat situation here is bad enough that Mayor de Blasio canceled a weekend trip to Iowa and other early primary states as part of his presidential campaign, per the Journal.
Cooling centers are opening citywide. You can find an interactive map here to find one near you...

Holiday weekend Saturday in Tompkins Square Park
Quiet day in Tompkins Square Park... and the heat index is in the mid-90s, which was also a pretty good movie.

Exclusive: It will be hot today
[8 a.m. on East 14th Street and Second Avenue]
I was thinking of maybe putting together a Hottest Day of the Summer post for tomorrow ... So, if you have some good Hot in the East Village-type photos that you'd like to share, please send them my way via the EV Grieve email.
If not, then I'll just post some stuff from EV Heave.

What will this be the summer of....?
It's June 1, might as well go ahead and declare/label this the summer of something around here. Why wait?
After the summer of 2010,some blogger the worldwide media declared that it was the Summer of the Bedbug(s). Last year, the Summer of the Rat(s).
Among the 2012 contenders: The Summer of the Bee. Or The Summer of the Swarm.
And we're well on our way. With the swarm on the Bowery a few weeks back (which ended up in Tompkins Square Park). And how about the swarm the other day at the Seaport?
It's happening. Out on the streets. People know.
And we've obtained photos that city officials don't want you to see.
And the City's Frontline Bee Responders practicing, uh, responding.
I'm happy to have this be the Summer of Something Else. Just let me know in the comments. Will work on it.

Breaking: The summer is going by too quickly
Or around the time that I toss the (unread) Summer Fun issues of various local publications that I was saving. And I have yet to go to Coney Island ... didn't make it to Belmont Park ... Let's focus now on fall movies! Fall fashions! Football! Best fall getaways. 10 books that you need to read this fall. Then in October, I'll have another post on how quickly fall has passed.
Anyway, in general, kind of a lousy summer? Yes? (No?)

8:51 this morning...
and the Tompkins Square Park dog run was empty...
Was just trying to remember the last Saturday morning in which it was empty at this hour...
Meanwhile, the Zip car lot on Second Street was empty too...
(The cars in the background are in a different lot...)
