Here's what we did last summer
Some scenes from the summer of 2013.
JUNE
We watched the annual Drag March
We bid farewell to the Blarney Cove
We saw a random bouncy castle out back of the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer on East Fourth Street
We came together to help a gravely injured employee of East Village Farm and Grocery
[Photo via @Xeus]
We got to hang out with Iggy Pop in 1993.
We mourned Arturo Vega
We rooted for Ray getting an A
[Shawn Chittle]
We learned that Midtown South has new boundaries.
We met Treeman
[EVG reader Jeremy]
We watched Katz's turn 125
We talked a lot about Citi Bikes, one way or another
We took in Art Around the Park during the Howl! Festival
[Bobby Williams]
JULY
We found new uses for Citi Bikes
We lined up to say bye to Max Fish

[Dan Efram]
We saw people write things on where David Schwimmer will live
[EVG reader Marc]
We had our last meal at Odessa Cafe and Bar
We almost fell into this...
We watched the Joe Strummer mural get blasted into oblivion
[Bobby Williams]
We looked for 13 Portals
[Jim Flynn]
We learned about Nestor
We watched a man steal a bike
We welcomed an actual normal new restaurant
We marveled at Rite Aid
We learned that the 9th Precinct illegally recruited a player for its basketball team
[Slum Goddess]
We took this photo
We went to the Tompkins Square Park riot 25th anniversary shows...
[Bobby Williams]
We enjoyed many amazing sunsets...

I know what you did this summer
How can I really be expected to post today when the first day of summer is here?
[Into the forest of St. Mark's Place yesterday]
Didn't prepare much for class today, being the first day of summer and all. (And something about a "solstice.") Was going to try an Open Thread Friday (so 2006!) kinda thing on summer Fridays. CAPTCHA is off. Talk about anything! See where it goes! But that's probably a really bad idea!
So what will this be the summer of? The Summer of Complaining About/Loving Citi Bikes? The Summer of High-Waited Denim Shorts?
I'm going for The Summer of the Tire Left In Front of Your Door. This will be a thing.
[The New York Times expands its automotive coverage]
See, this is what happens when you take away parking spots. People start spreading their car parts everywhere.
See you after Labor Day.
Previously on EV Grieve:
How can I really be expected to post today when 78 degrees™ is on the way?
How can I really be expected to post today when the Storm of Feb. 8™ is on the way?
How can I really be expected to post today when heavy thunderstorms are likely on the way?

So long summer...
Summer isn't officially over... just ceremoniously with the arrival of Labor Day Weekend. (Don't worry — according to The Wall Street Journal, you can still wear white jeans past Labor Day.)
So The Summer of Bees™ prediction didn't really pan out.
Anyway, so long Moira ... Katie ... crusties ... storm clouds ... fake human kidney ... (these were all among the most popular EVG posts based on traffic or pageviews or whatever)...
And I've had better summers. You?

Summertime in New York City: The East Village 1991
In honor of the first official day of summer... a video titled "Summertime in New York City: The East Village 1991."
Here's the description via YouTube:
H/T to Neighborhoodr for first posting this video several weeks ago.
Here's the description via YouTube:
The Lower East side, 1991, NYC. I weep when I see this. I used to live here. 13th street between B and C. With Khusenaton, on flute. I see him step right in here, he used to do that when I read. Intense, beautiful fantastic. Dead. He died that winter. I can remember the way he used to say, "here comes James." "Hardcore. too deep." A beautiful human being. He told the truth, and was my friend. It seems long ago, and like yesterday.

What will this be the summer of....?
It's June 1, might as well go ahead and declare/label this the summer of something around here. Why wait?
After the summer of 2010,some blogger the worldwide media declared that it was the Summer of the Bedbug(s). Last year, the Summer of the Rat(s).
Among the 2012 contenders: The Summer of the Bee. Or The Summer of the Swarm.
And we're well on our way. With the swarm on the Bowery a few weeks back (which ended up in Tompkins Square Park). And how about the swarm the other day at the Seaport?
It's happening. Out on the streets. People know.
And we've obtained photos that city officials don't want you to see.
And the City's Frontline Bee Responders practicing, uh, responding.
I'm happy to have this be the Summer of Something Else. Just let me know in the comments. Will work on it.
