Last night, Australian sax/drums duo Party Dozen made their first (noisy!) NYC appearance... opening for Algiers at Racket. 

Looking forward to hearing more from them.

A 'Grave' situation

 

The underrated San Diego-based duo Crocodiles (Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell) are back with a new album, Upside Down In Heaven, due out on April 7.

The video here is for one of the singles, "Love Beyond the Grave."

They'll be at Mercury Lounge on May 4.

'Bass' master

 

Legendary post-punk musician, artist and filmmaker Gina Birch has released her debut solo record, "I Play My Bass Loud."

Birch was a founding member of The Raincoats (🙌).

The video is for the title track, "I Play My Bass Loud." Birch has said, "The song is a celebration of the bass guitar as a voice, simple or layered, pounding or dancing or everything at once."

Ring in the new year

 

There's a new (great!) record out by R. Ring, a band featuring Kelley Deal (of the Breeders) and Mike Montgomery.

'Everybody' wants some

 

Bass Drum of Death's fifth full-length release, Say I Won't, is out now on Fat Possum Records.

BDOD leader John Barrett, along with his band, his brother Jim and Ian Kirkpatrick, will be one L-train stop away at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on March 31.

'Steel' breeze

 

Food for Worms, the new record from Shame, comes out on Feb. 24... the video here is for the first single, "Fingers of Steel." 

And you can see Shame live at Warsaw on Driggs Avenue on May 14.

Canadian trio Men I Trust released several singles last year, including "Billie Toppy" (⬆️).  Their fans are hoping for a full-length release in 2023...

In this season of the listicle... a top-20 record contender — Excess, the second release from the Los Angeles-based trio Automatic. The video here is for "Teen Beat."

Sweet 'Nothing'

 

Don’t Know What You're In Until You're Out is the just-released second record from the Philadelphia-based band Gladie ... the video here is for the anthemic indie-pop track "Nothing." 

They'll be at the Bowery Ballroom on Dec. 16, though that show is sold out.

A Thanksgiving palate cleanser with the Osees... from a recent six-song performance on Seattle's KEXP. 

The Los Angeles-based band will be out at Brooklyn Made on Dec. 16-17.

Cherry-coloured punk

 

Endure, the well-reviewed new record from Special Interest, is out now... the video here is for "Cherry Blue Intention."

'Teen' beat

 

The Haunted Youth are a Belgian-based band putting out some damn good dream pop, at least based on their debut release Dawn of the Freak.

'Teenage' kicks

 

For the Halloween weekend... the Cramps with "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" ... with live footage from August 1980 and  "Urgh! A Music War." (Not the best-quality video, unfortunately.)

The song also makes an appearance in "Halloween Kills," which you really don't heed to see. 

Slow burn

 

Last month, Preoccupations released Arrangements,  the Canadian band's fourth record ... the video here is for "Slowly."
