I moved to the EV in 1987. Schacht's was still there. I remember the delicious smell of pickles in barrels and the sawdust on the floor. At the time as a relocated uptown shikza I didn't appreciate their menu of lox et al. Now I'm still a shikza but a bagel with lox is one of my all-time favorites and Russ and Daughters is few blocks away.
Schacht's was also know for it's 3pm Fresh Roasted Turkey Daily with Stuffing Max would bring it out and start carving around 3pm and it usually be gone by close of business the cured Fish was great as well but that Turkey was a delicious ka pow for the buck in it's glory
I am so glad to see this photo! I had forgotten how all this looked. The Fillmore stairs, Schacht, Brownie Points - all lost to time. Thank goodness for Carmine and Block Drug; they're the anchors of this part of the hood.
Schact’s! How I miss it. Even Max, who if I recall correctly retired to Rhode Island. Block Drug is fantastic. Carmine Sr., Jr. and his wife Beth deserve a neighborhood hero award. They are very caring and of great help to the community , particularly seniors. Shop local.
