[Updated] Birthday wishes for Nicholas Figueroa on 2nd Avenue

Nicholas Figueroa, who died in the gas explosion at 121 Second Ave. on March 26, would have been 24 today.

A Figueroa family member stopped by the site of the blast on Second Avenue and East Seventh Street this morning to hang the Happy Birthday banners.

Moises Ismael Locón Yac also died during the explosion that leveled three buildings at 117-123 Second Ave.

Updated 7 p.m.

Nicholas's friends and family are gathering on the sidewalk this evening to celebrate his birthday…

His mother made cupcakes for passersby…

… and here is a birthday greeting from his parents…

Thanks to EVG reader Daniel for the photos

Just stopped by and spoke to Nick's wonderful family.
They are planning to stay until later this evening
and neighborhood people are welcome to stop by and say hello.

when is the landlady going to be held responsible?

Nicholas was blessed with a very loving family, which makes his passing that much more painful.

Happy Birthday, Nicholas, and I pray that your family is comforted. I think it's wonderful the way they came together at the site to celebrate your life today.

This young man was beautiful and so well loved. Believe me, he sees how much his family misses him. Such good people. Such undeserved hardship. It's good that we are all still remembering and celebrating these young people. It helps the healing, keeps them in our hearts. Still, we must keep fighting for justice for the families of those who were tragically killed.

Passing this morning I saw the Birthday banner and told my 5 month old about Nicholas and why he died. I know he is too young to understand, but I hope we all tell this story and insist our that our city inspects and never repeats this horrible event.
I send love and hugs to both families, I can not imagine losing my son because of corruption and greed of a landlord . Despicable.
