A memorial for Dennis Edge in Tompkins Square Park

Photos by Steven

Today, friends of Dennis Edge came together in a place that he loved so much — Tompkins Square Park.

Edge, an East Village resident since 1970, passed away last Friday after a short illness.

For years, he documented the birds of Tompkins Square Park, even publishing a book on the subject...
Edge, a graphic designer by trade, picked up birding later in his life.
Throughout the afternoon, people stopped by and left tributes to Edge as well as homemade pieces of art...
We'll have more on Dennis and his life in a follow-up post.

Multiple readers told me how much he will be missed...

No!! My gosh he will be missed!!! So easy to talk to and so much in love with birds. You knew the world was okay for a moment when you saw his lens.

Oh no! I wondered why I hadn’t seen him recently. Yes, he was always so friendly. RIP

I used to speak to this man while out walking my dog. The world needs more people like him.

Dennis was a sweet man. We were in many art exhibitions with The Artistas de Loisaida,
curated by Carolyn Ratcliffe. He was a Great Photographer, RIP Dennis
Beautiful Memorial, Thank you EV Grieve and family and friends. I'll stop by today

Many people, apparently, would like to know where to get the book. And if it's out of print, it would be great if someone could try to get it back into print.

Even a photographed or scanned copy of his original book would be welcome.

Dennis was a well loved and regarded neighbor on our block of E. 9th Street, as well as birder. He'd recently let us know that he was working on publishing (self, we believe) his book of TSP/EV birds. Between his fellow birders (Steven among them) and us, we're sure we can let folks know when and where the book will be available. In the meantime, he'll be sorely missed by many.

Thank u. I have 2 if Dennis’s signed prints in my wall. I would love to buy an original or high res version. He also photographed the birds in La Plaza Cultural

I regret I never met Dennis, as I only started visiting the park when I started teaching at a local middle school late last year. I'd love to get a copy of Dennis's book for myself and one for the school!

I am among Dennis's friends, along with Marush above who helped get the book published. It is fresh off the presses. Advance copies were delivered over the summer, and Dennis got to see them and even autograph some. The bulk of the deliver is coming in any day now, but it is a limited run, so do get your order in. It's a wonderful legacy to Dennis's artistry and love of nature, birds in particular!
