Honest Chops Butchery has left 9th Street

Photos by Stacie Joy

Honest Chops, billed as "the first organic and humane halal butcher shop in New York City," has moved out of its basement location at 319 E. Ninth St. between First Avenue and Second Avenue.

According to a tipster, the 10-year lease was up (the shop opened in March 2014) ... and they are looking for a new storefront. (H/T MP!) They will be reopening, though they don't have space just yet. People can email them to keep updated.

Workers yesterday were moving out some of the shop's fixtures ...
Burgers By Honest Chops closed on MacDougal Street in May 2022. Ownership said in a Facebook post "that prices were going up substantially" via their suppliers, and they didn't want to pass on the increase to patrons.

Love these guys and their very high quality products. It would be VERY convenient for me if they moved into the storefront at 124 2nd Avenue, former home of Mochie Donuts most recently, one-time the Dumpling Shop, and for many years San Loco. Honest Chops MUST stay in our hood!

I LOVE THEM. Come back soon please. A guy who worked at one of the meat vendors at Union Square farmer's market told me that is where he got his meat because he could not afford anything at Union Square. Businesses like this are what make a community. Thank you Honest Chops.

They were our great supporters. They donated 50 lb of meat just this week. We love them and their high quality meat and can not wait for them to re-emerge in the neighborhood.

Damn! That sucks, they had such high quality products. I really hope they find a new storefront soon.

Oh no! Been going there since opening day! I hope they find a new place ASAP here in the EV. Nothing else compares 😢.

Do your research…. It is highly debatable if Halal slaughter is humane just as any other slaughter of animals for human food consumption. Labeling a food from slaughtered animals as sourced in a “humane” manner is a ploy to make the consumer feel less guilty.
The only way to truly ensure that animals were treated humanely (in life and in slaughter) is to not eat foods that are animal by products.

If they come back, please tell us immediately where their new address is!

Love these guys

Maybe they could move down the block to 321, the space where Uliana hair salon used to be. She just left a few months ago and it seems to still be vacant. It's a great space, also basement level. Plus, Jimi Hendrix used to live there!
