The new mini forest in Tompkins Square Park is now in the ground... along Seventh Street between Avenue A and B, as reported yesterday.
The planting comes just in time for today's fifth annual City of Forest Day, a citywide celebration of New York's urban forest organized by Forest for All NYC in partnership with Parks and Open Space Partners NYC and the city's Parks Department.
Nearly 150 events are taking place across the five boroughs today, with New Yorkers participating in tree care, bulb planting, guided walks, volunteer projects and other activities focused on the city's trees and green spaces.
The event also follows the release earlier this year of New York City's first Urban Forest Plan, a long-term roadmap for managing and expanding a network that includes more than 7 million trees.
As we noted, the Tompkins Square Park mini forest is part of a larger round of plantings in the park that also includes new trees and a rain garden.

and keep the humans out too
thank you for all who worked on this project . looks great?
Thanks to all who helped put these in. The gardens & forest will be loved for ages. Now onto dog owners & trash-tossers.
I hope the plantings get closer to the playground. It'll make that area more magical for the kids.
Thanks to LES Ecology, Parks Dept, and all the volunteers for planting this. It’s going to look even more amazing as it grows in.
I do worry because the park encourages dogs to meander between the pollinator pockets and (that formerly empty) area is where they always ended up, colliding with the kids playing there.
I haven’t looked since the weekend but the sneaky exit on the west side of the playground had a group of plantings directly against it. I assume it will get a little trampled. This is why Parks should interact with users of the area before finalizing plantings. Any of the parents could have told them so.
And tell the people on the Ave B corner of the park to remove those illegal white signs that look trashy as hell “dog crossing” “pollinator” shit is not necessary and takes away from nature. Yes, we know what Flowers do and we know that dogs can walk through the path. These people are annoying.
